what's better to use- sand, dirt, river silt, etc? I've used silt before when my dogs were puppies to fill digging holes, but this is a larger scale

what's the going rate for say buying a yard of those materials, in BR

thanks

this. Mason sand is like $50/yard, alot of places will load into the back of a pickup truck so you don't have to pay for delivery.

If you have large holes it is best to fill most of the hole with native topsoil and then top with mason. Fill smaller holes with mason when the grass is actively growing. If no grass then backfill whenever.
