I just bought 5.5 acres of pasture land that was once’s used as a hay field. The field is full of Johnson grass and other weeds that I have no idea what that are. What’s a good all around herbicide that will kill a majority of the weeds but won’t harm the natural grass? We plan on building our home there towards the end of the year. Just trying to get the property in shape before we start.

Could you do a controlled burn?

5.5 acres? If I were you I would pick out 10,000 or so square feet around the area where the main home would be and start there. It is very difficult to tackle all that land at once.

Johnson grass will eventually die out with repeated mowing.

Find a disc harrow and start from scratch.

My house sits in a 10 acre field. I had a few large patches of jg and hit it repeatedly with round up two years ago. It has filled in nicely with other smaller grasses. Around the house I hit the lawn quite a bit with 24d and it has slowly gotten quite nice.

It depends on the grass species you have because chemical management will vary if going the herbicide route. Bermuda, bahai, mixed, etc.
