Hey guys i dug a pond and took that dirt and spreaded it around my shop. Its not good enough dirt to grow grass.
Can i disc it and fertilize it to help it grow something?
How long should i wait before i plant it if i do that.
Im thinking pensecola bahaya will grow on it possibly

Any suggestions.

re: Need help with grass!!!
what's the soil consist of? if its heavy clay, no mount of tilling and reworking will help it.

Its not heavy clay. Really sandy but when it rains it gets hard

re: Need help with grass!!!
possible to use it as fill, but not likely to be used as a decent planting surface.

Working it down and fertilize might be able to grow some grass. give it a shot

You can disk it up and amend the soil to try to help it out. Some grasses will grow better than others in less than ideal soil conditions. A soil analysis can be performed to really help you determine what you need to add.

Have you tried to grow something in it?

I’m always skeptical of store bought seeds as many people struggle to get them to germinate. Did you adequately prepare and water the seeds?

You have several options.

You can do a soil analysis to get more detail on what to add. They can help you with pH, organic material, nutrients, etc.

You can bring in top soil and spread it thin over the dirt. This will give you a better base to establish the lawn.

You can prep it a little and sod over the dirt. This may be more expensive, but it will give you an instant lawn.

You can try to amend the soil that’s there without an analysis. This would be adding in organic material (disking or tilling it in), fertilizing, and then planting new seeds. If the pH is way off it may be an issue. There’s at home kits or pH strips that may give you an idea if it’s high or low. You could use that inaccurate info to bring in Lime or Sulfur to adjust the pH.

Where would one get a soil analysis done?

Every land grant institution has one. LSU School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences can do this. I work in this department and they’re back to analyzing samples. Send there directly or go through the county agent office in your parish.
