I can build a free standing patio cover much cheaper than tying into existing roof. The problem is the post needs to be set right in front of patio door. I don’t really want a post right In line with patio doors so what are my options?Roof riser attachments get bad reviews. Can I get away with not putting a post on the corner in front of door?

You need not have 4 post nor do you need them in the corners.

I would go with a 2 legged design, this is overkill but you should get the point, google 2 legged pergola and you should find some free plans

Move the post off the corner and cantilever a beam over the post

(The 1/3 max would depend on the beam depth)

This is what I thought about but didn’t have any idea if it would be ok. Thanks Pahnew for the drawing.

Pahnew's design should work perfectly.
