Neighbor mentioned it to me the other day. His yard man brought it to his attentions and is worried that it could damage his lawn equipment.

He is a good neighbor and I don't want to ruin our relationship.

What should/could I do about this? Can I just hack them with a hatchet?

Nothing unless you cut down the tree and probably a good bit of it’s root system.

use a cordless sawzall on anything exposed above ground, you can cut right through dirt and all and make easy work of keeping it in check. probably only need to do it every few years

I had 2 cypress trees in my backyard at my old house. Once every year or 2 id go around the yard with a pickaxe and remove as many new knees as I could find.

Sounds like an easy and reasonable solution and an excuse to buy another shop tool.

Thx

If there are a lot then rent a stump grinder and go to town.

My neighbor has big roots go under the fence and into my yard. I just took an axe to them, from the research I’ve done it won’t kill the tree.

I needed to plant hedges there though so needed them out of way

Does he not cut his grass?

I just run over mine with the mower every week.

Tell him cut them down as he feels necessary

This. I understand the tree is on your property, but those knees are his problem. Tell him to have at them and call it a day.

So when he drills holes in them and fills them with some nasty stuff then the OP can handle the dead tree problem?

Just saying...The OP might want to go a more neighborly route.

If we are talking about knees and more than a couple most people will regret using a reciprocating saw... DAMHIK

I use a battery-powered chainsaw I use for small jobs to cut knees off flush with the ground. I paint the exposed wood with Fertilome which seems to extend the cut times significantly (to maybe 4 years) and doesn't seem to have any effect on the trees themselves. I've been doing it for about 12 years on the back part of my camp property where I keep my boat trailer. I wouldn't really bother until they got pretty high but they will frick up a mower so I keep them at bay.

That's what I do with the roots from my neighbor's tree

I tried it and stopped after two of them.

I can take some vibration on my arms/shoulders, but that thing rattled my brains.

I’ll try a chainsaw next
