We’ve had this microwave for four months with zero problems but suddenly this morning it won’t work. As soon as we turn it on, the breaker flips off. Plugged it into a different outlet and the same thing happened.

What could be causing this to happen suddenly when it was operating fine before? Is it possible for it to just randomly begin to try using more power than before? It’s a 120 volt / 1,200 watt microwave, if that helps.

Thanks!

Sounds like something shorted out in the unit.

Still under warranty?

The breaker may be getting weak or you may need a high magnetic 20 amp breaker.

You should be able to get a high magnetic breaker at Home Depot or Lowe’s depending on what type of panel you have.

Are you sure this outlet is on a different circuit?

This just started happening to our oven when we used bake. It turned out to be the unit and not the wiring or breaker. I’d bet it’s the microwave. “They don’t make them like they used to” is very true.

We had a Samsung microwave that acted exactly like this. Turned out there was a weak spot on the interior shielding that was causing it short to the frame and trip the breaker. Repair tech declared it irreparable and a fire hazard. It was outside of the factory warranty but our credit card doubled the warranty period and refunded our purchase in full.

From the moment I built my house our microwave would trip the breaker ever once in a while. After 17 years our microwave died and we bought a new one and it hasn’t tripped since. Weird.

its going to be the magneto or the transformer for the magneto has gone bad, either way its junk, go buy a new one before it goes in some spectacular smokey fashion

Sounds like the capacitor shorted out

I also have experience with this and it was the microwave itself that was the problem. Had to get a new one, unfortunately.
