I have a Maytag Bravos XL washer that's 5-6 years old.

It goes through a cycle but the shows a "drn" code and won't drain.

No clogs in the drain hoses or the drain. I changed the drain pump. Still nothing. Any ideas?

We have one three years old drains and wont spin all the time. Within warranty but service sucks you wait for a minimum of a week and the guy comes out and fumbles. 4 attempted repairs so far its absolute guesswork. I figure they should have just replaced the machine and they would be ahead now.

sadly you could just replace these with a set of early 2000s direct drive whirlpool machines off craigslist for probably $100 and they would run for the next 50 years with only $10 part replacements and 10 minute youtube videos.

your jaw would drop at how fast a machine with a working agitator and ability to set your water level will knock out a load of laundry.

we as a society have low expectations on how long stuff should last and manufacturers love the 'replace every 3-5 years' cycle so there's no motivation to make something that will run for 50 years.

sounds cynical but its true. i picked up a set off the side of the road someone was getting rid of, replaced a $3 set of dog ears on the washer and bought a $3 bottle of white enamel touch up paint and they've been washing the frick out my clothes for 5 years now.

ask yourself; why in the hell do you need a computer on your washer to agitate, rinse & spin your laundry? what kind of magic do you think a computer is going to bring to that process? for 100 years we had washer & dryers that made our clothes clean with a couple of clickety clack mechanical dials but now suddenly that's old tech and our clothes weren't really fresh & clean after all?

all hail napolean; patron saint of trouble-free washers & dryers. he red-pilled me and makes me want to buy 3 or 4 sets of mid 2000s whirlpools just have in case i want to swap them in 50 years.

Yep. I have a 20 year old roper from Lowe’s. As basic as it gets. The only thing I’ve replaced is the lid switch, 2x. I’ll never get a fancy computer driven one. No way to justify it.

i bought the switch, then before i installed it napoleon was like 'why do you actually want that back on?' and i realized i kinda liked having it run with the lid open so its still sitting in a drawer next to the washing machine 3 years later. i dont see a point in putting a lid switch back on.

Update--I had an appliance technician look at it today. He said it's the control panel which is like a $210 part.

FYI he said if you're going to spend close to a grand for a washer, get a Speed Queen.

At some point, everyone realizes the old school washer/dryer type is the way to go. I purchased a speed queen combo a few years ago with all mechanical parts. Simple and dependable.

I thought Maytag was on the dependable list?

Ok. Drain issue.
Set to "drain /spin" listen for sound of drain pump.
If you hear pump, then replace pump, if you don't hear pump. Check for voltage at the pump.
If no voltage check for voltage at board connector for pump. If you have voltage then get a new wiring harness, if you don't have voltage get a new control board.

It's going to be the pump or the control board. Or a slight chance a broken wire between the two.

Maytag = Whirlpool
They aren't on my dependable list.

There are companies in Texas that just specialize in refurbished direct drive Whirlpools. They are the holy grail of washers.

Worst case the transmission goes out. Well if you're willing you can rebuild it for $35. Then I guess the timer can fail but it's rare.

When I come across them I convince people that there is no other option but repair. Replacement is a bad move.

I've been watching the prices slowly creep up on Craigslist. People who are looking at reasons to buy a $1000 speed queen are starting to go down the rabbit hole and realize these units exist for much cheaper but you may have to give them a little love to get them running well and looking good.

Eta spend your money on a nice car and wash and polish it so it looks good when you're out and about. Nobody brings guests into their laundry room to show off a washer. . You just need something that is cheap to maintain, works like a horse and reliable.

100% this. I had a GE that lasted 2 years...I had it repaired...it went out again a year later. Bought a Speed Queen and haven't looked back. Those things are tanks.

I regret that I only have one upvote. The old school washers and dryers, worked better, were easy to repair and lasted 5 times as long. I kick myself for getting rid of our late 90s Kenmores for front loaders last time we moved. Give me a few knobs, an agitator and a start button.
