I have a pump shed over my water well. This spring, I noticed a swarm of termites flying out of the shed. They were crawling out from under the concrete floor. The shed is small maybe 6x5 feet square.

I would like to destroy the nest as they are eating up the shed and are too close to the house. The problem is the nest is located so close to the water well. Any ideas how to destroy that nest without an impact on my water supply?

My first attempt would be to dig around the slab like you would to saturate the area with some type pesticide for termites and saturate the ground with boiling hot water.

I know they are different species, but I got rid of a large red ant infestation in my compost pile doing just that a few years ago.

I would think the pipe supplying your water is well below the surface and would not be affected if you used some type termite baits or even saturated the ground with termite pesticide.

I’m only in the rental property business and run into them so tifwiw. But termites die very easy. Do you have a termite or pest control contract at your residence?

I’d consider that if so, and have a pro do it as they will monitor it.

If not, order some termidor online and spray the hell out of it

Don’t disturb them or you may splinter the nest., use Blister bait packs, they eat it Abd die. May need to use a few and kill them and it will take a while.

Then once they stop taking the blister bait, you can go in and cut it out and repair.

if they are native termites the nest is underground.
if they are formosan termites your shed is the nest

That has been my concern if somehow the pesticides end up in my drinking water. Boiling hot water would not be a problem but I am not sure it would actually reach the nest. My understanding is that nests are several feet underground. I need to doublecheck how deep. And yes, IIRC, the water pipe is around 120 feet deep but I don't know how deep is the water level.

Is termidor a human poison if it gets into the water?

I put a number of those bait traps out around the shed and along the edge of the house nearest the shed. They did pop to indicate the bait was being eaten. However when I opened up the bait traps, there were no termites present. Instead I found these little tiny bugs devouring the bait but I am pretty sure they were not termites. Also I noticed those traps seem to pop up their trigger alarms if they get wet. Best to put them in a drier location, I think.

I am pretty sure they are underground and thus natives as the flying termites were emerging from under the concrete flooring of the shed. This spring I sprayed the hell out of them with windex window cleaner as they were coming out. Killed most of them off and I didn't feel I was using enough window cleaner to be a threat to the water supply. At least, we are still here now.

My termite guy suggested I buy these from Amazon to put at my camp, but the bait only lasts 6 months vs a year since it’s not commercial grade.

Put down bait - it’s the only way to get rid of them for sure. They bring it back to the best and die vs you fricking around digging.

Fipronil, the active ingredient in Termidor, is highly insoluble and tightly binds to soil particles where it is applied. It is not going to leach into your water well.

Yes, I think I am going to put some more out. It can't hurt. The problem is the termites never went to the bait. The station would pop but no termites.

Months ago, I found a video from an old termite guy and in the old days, they would make their own termite bait traps. And just did a search and found the video again. Located here for anyone who doesn't want to buy the commercial stuff. LINK
