Hey everyone,

Live in Greensboro,NC. We have a couple of flower bed areas in front of our house that is pretty much in permanent shade from a large maple tree that I would like to keep. Keeps our front porch in nice shade.

I'd like to plant a small/dwarf evergreen at the corner of the house and several 3ft flowering plants that stay leafed all year round right by the house with an assortment to be determined coming out away from the house in the beds.

So, hoping for some ideas on a dwarf tree and 3ft flowering plants that can thrive in shade. Thanks in advance.

Following this. I have a similar situation and I'm interested in the recommendations you get.

Many good options. Small evergreen shrubs for shade in the 3 ft range - look into shi shi gashira camellias, perhaps conversion piece azaleas (or related). What max size in height do you envision with an evergreen dwarf tree? Maybe something like a Little Gem Magnolia?

Suggestion - why not drive to Raleigh and walk the grounds of the J.C. Raulston Arboretum for ideas LINK, it’s really nice and a great place to visit for ideas, but I guess it’s closed for the time being due to Covid

You should probably wait to winter to plant shrubs/trees anyway - maybe it will open before then.

I was thinking of something like a dwarf spruce (not sure how tall they actually get), but something about 5ft tall and 3 ft wide. I planted a dwarf spruce, labeled as such anyway, years ago off our back deck, and the thing grew to over 10 ft tall and very broad. Had to cut it down because it got too big. Not sure if it was actually a dwarf.

The major issue is shade. I wanted to make sure to get some options that do not need direct sunlight.

My wife brought up azaleas yesterday. Do they stay green all year? I don't even know for sure. I know they bloom very short periods though.

Yes - azaleas are evergreen, though there are some native azaleas that are deciduous but those are not routinely sold at retail nurseries.

Why don’t you send these guys (2 brothers brought up in the plant nursery business) at Mr. Maples near Asheville an email and ask for a suggestion for a shade tolerant dwarf conifer tree LINK that might work for you.Though they specialize in Jap Maples they also sell some dwarf evergreen conifers that might work for you in your area, zone 7 I assume. I’ve ordered several Jap maples from them and I understand from my daughter and SIL who live in Raleigh and met and bought from them that they are nice and helpful guys.

For dense shade, check out Dwarf Pittosporum and Carolina Rhododendron. Or a dwarf variety of Japanese Fatsia.

It's not evergreen, but Japanese maples make a great show tree for shady locations.

Thanks, those look like two nice options.

I've got a 20 year old Japanese maple by our deck. Love it. It's grown to be a big beautiful tree. Often wonder how much I could sell it for. Heard they're worth decent money that big.

I like Encore Azaleas and Hostas. Two perennials that like shade and are easy. I also like rosemary bushes and Gardenias (which can grow large)

Not really, JMs tend to root shallow.
