Yes - more than likely.

A few years ago we had a static pressure reading done and based on it we added an extra return air vent. We were told that units these days usually have undersized amount of return air ducts and usually the usually the builder doesn’t both adding a second one simply bc of increased cost. We had a second one added when we bought this house because they said it should help not stress the unit out and help with the static pressure.

Return air should equal or slightly exceed supply air - of course all matched to the tonnage of your HVAC. Static pressure measurement is the simplest and quickest method to determine that.

Sounds like a good HVAC company that worked on your unit 3 years ago - I’d call them to check out your current issue.

re: Is there something wrong with my ac unit?
If you're in La. our daytime temperatures are getting into the upper 80's, low 90's with at least a "feels like" temperature about 7-10 degrees hotter.

Your A/C is likely cooling the daytime temperature by about 13-15 degrees cooler than the outside temperature and with the nightly temperatures being in the mid 70's now, it is easily taking it down to 71 at night for only about a 5-6 degree swing.

Like others have mentioned, could be dirty coils on the outside unit or even dirty coils on the inside unit, maybe a little low on freon, etc.

Before I changed out my entire unit 2 years ago I had an issue with my old unit not cooling and I opened the interior unit and did a good cleaning on the coils and that made a big difference in how it cooled.

Maybe it's just time for a good cleaning.

re: Is there something wrong with my ac unit?
Do you perhaps have a thermostat in your house for your HVAC that measures and controls your AC based on both temperature and humidity? We upgraded ours to Honeywell thermostats back in 2010 and our AC will turn on based on humidity in the house or temperature. When it gets really humid outside, sometimes our AC runs even when the temperature inside the house is cooler than what we have it set for.

re: Is there something wrong with my ac unit?
I have this issue every year. Just started again this week with the heat/humidity. The back of my house, which is the kitchen, living room and master bed faces due west. And it’s all windows. Had them changed to double low e a few years back. But when that sun gets to that side, it torches my backyard.
Last year after having it serviced and putting a new motor in the outside unit, I found that I could set it at 74 and still get it to cut off pre-afternoon. Afternoon to early evening, it wouldn’t.
This week I’m noticing it creeping to 75-76 around 4-5pm. Time to make that call again lol
Also thinking doing some more insulating in the attic soon

When I had mine serviced last, it was around $90 for the first pound, and my guy gives repeat customers a little discount for additional pounds. It needed around 2 lbs and my total for that was $155 plus the $90 service call. Of course this was a year ago according to my emails, and prices have probably continued to go up.

As of 2 months ago, that was still about standard. Asked for recs on my neighborhood Facebook page and used a tech that lives in the subdivision. He gave me a "neighborhood discount." $80 for service call/cleaning and $115 for 1.5 lbs of R-22.

Point? Worth it to check for neighborhood HVAC guy

I wash my outside unit 2 sometimes 3 times a year depending on how dusty it's been or after the cotton woods and thistle bloom. That white fuzz will form a mat over the fins on the unit.

My sister-in-law is now a widow and she called one day saying her A/C was not working right and asked if I'd take a look at it.

I got to her house and went outside to check the condensing unit and saw it was totally blocked up with matted dog hair. At that time she had 7 dogs around the house and for some reason they loved to hang around the outside unit.

I took all the outer metal framing I could remove from it, got a stiff bristled nylon brush, the hose and bought some spray cleaner from Home Depot and went to work. It took over an hour to get the fins cleaned enough to actually see fins and clear the dog hair off them.

Surprise, surprise, the unit cooled down the house like it should.

UPDATE
So someone came out and here’s what they did. Cleaned and serviced, changed 2 capacitors, and put 2 lbs of R410A refrigerant. Maybe this thread will save someone a couple bucks

Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak really didn't do you any favors.

You should have your A/C serviced once a year. Also, change your filter out every month on the 1st of the month so you remember to do it. If your A/C can't breathe, it suffers.

Thanks for the update tiger.

Cooling better?

What was total bill?

What was reason for changing capacitors?

re: Is there something wrong with my ac unit?
Right now it’s running at 75 but it’s set at 73. Yesterday at this time it was running at 77 when set at 73. He said the outside unit was pretty dirty. The bill was $300. So I guess that’s the cost of the 2 degrees lower im getting right now. Last night at 9 the temp was still 77 so I’m going to try and track to see when I actually hit the set point tonight. Long story short it’s a little cooler but I’m unsure if it’s good to go honestly. Hoping I didn’t just throw away $300. As far as the capacitors he replaced one inside and one outside. I don’t know anymore details than that.

You're good, and pretty reasonable price.

The unit may still be trying to catch up from yesterday.

Plenty of Youtube videos on washing the outside (condenser) coils for next time.

Lennox had a class action lawsuit around that time for evaporator coils that went bad. Could be the case for you. I had that issue and have replaced 2 of the 3 evaporator coils in my units due to leaks.
