below are some of the pictures from our soon to be new home, and the kitchen seems to have never been updated except for maybe the stove and refrigerator. we know new appliances all around will be necessary, but some of the other things we can't decide on. this kitchen is straight out of the '90s.

here are some of the ideas we want to do:

- keep the current layout
- paint the cabinets (white or maybe an accent color)
- paint the walls
- replace the range hood with an above stove microwave (this will require a shallower cabinet)
- keep the tile floors for now
- replace the counter tops

Lose the furr down and get cabinets that extend all the way from the ceiling.

We did this in our remodel and it was the one of the best decisions we made in our kitchen. Then extend cabinets all the way to the window.

This leads to the other really good decision we made. I’d reconsider this if at all possible if you even think you’ll cook a lot, and get a nice Zephyr hood or the like that moves lots of air. We have our microwave in a deeper upper cabinet section that is set between two standard 12” deep cabinets. It may be 18” deep.

These aren’t mine but you get the idea. Our microwave cabinet is the same height as the two surrounding 12” deep cabinets (doesn’t hang lower as shown below, they’re flush at the bottom) , and on the bottom of the center section there’s an opening for the microwave like the picture. We had a plug wired into the back of the opening so wires wouldn’t show.

Remove the tall skinny cabinet section by the pantry and extend the regular cabinets/countertops, this could allow for you to have enough room to do as described above for the microwave.

Replace the skinny upper cabinet to the left of the hood with an end shelf as shown below for cookbooks, and either leave the lower skinny section for baking sheets or replace it with a pull-out spice rack.

What is that empty space above the kitchen ceiling?

Move the sink out of the corner. It really kills party of the functionality of the peninsula. Put it closer to the dishwasher so you aren't carrying wet dishes over a few steps every time you load it up. Replace the shallow 2-basin sink with a deeper single basin.

What kind of budget? Wall behind fridge structural? Anything in soffits? I just completely opened up my kitchen and remodeled and it made the entire house feel so much better.

If wanting to just "refresh it":
-Paint cabinets (its good they have hidden hinges already)
-New cabinet hardware
-Remove kitchen light and texture on ceiling
-Recessed puck lights
-Counters
-Undermount sink
-Remove those small blinds and curtains on window (get some 2 inch blinds)
-Appliances

Can probably do the above for 10-13k I would think.

Id get rid of this, put the sink and countertops along the rest of the wall towards your backyard(Im assuming)

quote:

Then add an island in the middle with seating here

quote:

Then either get a countertop depth fridge where it is or move it to the left or right of sinks current location. If you can move it, Id open up that wall to your living room

Go full HGTV. open that wall up to the living room. I'm not a fan of the peninsula, so I'd scrap that. Like previous post said, counter depth fridge to get some more room.

unless he moves his fridge, he can't. to the right of that opening is the outdoors and to the left is the fridge. that being said, depending on how much he values the wall where the sink/peninsula is, he could take out that wall and move the fridge and microwave to the side where the sink is and put in an island. But then his stove would look a tad odd on that small wall by itself.
but maybe he could incorporate the stove/sink/microwave into an island?

here's pictures of ours we did late last year, if that's any inspiration.

Looks like oak cabinets.

And if so... being opened pored they won't paint well.

Eta: First thing I'd take the texture off ceilings, get rid of big florescent light, and put in several flush mount (thin) LED lights.

How do I run power to an island when there’s nothing there now? Tear up the foundation and run a line?

Concrete saw, cut a small channel in your slab. Doesn't have to be very deep. Lay conduit in the channel and pull the Romex through that. Cover the conduit/fill the trench with a concrete patch. I did this when I added an island in my kitchen. You can rent the concrete saw from Home Depot.

Make sure you have the kitchen tarped/sealed off. Cutting into the slab will produce copious amounts of concrete dust!

Get rid of the fur down and do full height uppers. If you don’t do this change all the doors and drawer fronts to either raised panel or shaker style

Nice tile back splash in color and style that updates the look

New granite/ marble/ quarts counter tops

Under mount kitchen sink in stainless

New stainless appliances and over range microwave/ vent combo

Remove the floor and do new updated style/ color tile

Get rid of that recessed light fixture

Paint all walls/ ceilings and get away from the stained wood trim and window seat.

What he said.

In our remodel we added a bathroom to our room where there was none before. Plumber just cut a channel in our concrete for plumbing. Not acting like this is easy or anything but you could run power and water there if you wanted to.
