It is a frigidaire, alarm went off last night when the temp was in the mid 20's on the unit. The unit appears to be holding in the mid 20's but is not getting back down to 3 -4 degrees like normal. It also appears to be running continuously. The unit is 10 years in age.

Anyone know the likely cause of this issue? Any troubleshooting?

Is it a frost free unit? If not, it may be iced up====and even if frost free, they can sometimes ice up. I'd remove what needs to be removed and put into ice chests to access any panels in the thing to see what's going on with the coils.

Also, when was the last time you cleaned under the thing? If you have coils under the unit like most refrigerators do, they can be clogged with dust, pet hair, and other sorts of crap making the unit work harder.

most common issues are gasket isnt sealing. often its because the door bangs against something and gets bent.

if you see ice building up on surfaces around the door then its got an air gap there

i have one that does this often if i dont lock it closed with the key. its a bit of a PITA but as long as i lock it there are no issues, if i forget it takes a few days but then its building ice until the door no longer closes.

if there are no air leaks and the door is sealed good then its most likely low on freon and time for a new one

also the fan opening or the air intake grill for the fan cannot be blocked or it will not work right

It is a frost free unit and we locked the door last night. No frost around the door but we have had the issue in the past.

well its either got a freon leak which is break even on repair vs replacement costs. repairing will cost around $200-$250 and it may just all leak out again in short order vs buying new and know you can relax and just forget about it.

or you managed to block the airflow for the fan. my buddy did this by blocking the slats at the bottom with bags of pecans he threw in there and the whole freezer full of shite melted down. after he threw out all the spoiled shite it worked great again. just got to keep in mind the air must be able to circulate to work right

its hard to do much trouble shooting on a forum but take everything out of it and leave the door open so it can defrost completely. tomorrow plug it back in and give it 4-5 hours to do its thing. if its not cooling right then toss it to the curb and get a new one.
