I have boxes of old Craftsman, but between these two brands which do you prefer.... primarily sockets and wrenches.

Preference to Husky, but this almost seems more like a HD vs Lowes question.
I view them as pretty much equal.

Not at all. Opinions about each store's brand.

I've gotten some Kobalt hand tools over the years and they are more than good enough for daily use.
Can't comment on Husky since I don't have a single tool by them.

Since Kobalt is no longer US made you are really comparing Eastern offshore tools. I tend to buy mechanics tools based on ratchet feel and while I prefer Wera they are at a different price point.
For non-Japanese Asian tools I would suggest you look at Craftsman bought from Sears.com. The deals they have on sets with all their coupons/money back etc promotions make them hard to beat on price and they will all be of similar quality to Kobalt and Husky. If you are willing to buy Asian tools the guys at The Garage Journal forums often find Harbor Freight Pittsburgh tools to be very similar in quality for less money. I admit to having very little experience with Asian tools but the Garage Journal guys as a whole rarely have poor recommendations.

I use husky wrenches and pliers daily. No real experience with kobalt but I'm sure either will work well for you
