Been here a while and saw evidence of my first rat early this summer. I put out two traps and caught a fat female on the first night. The second trap stayed out for days with no takers, so I put it up. FF to last week and I started finding sunflower shells from our feeder in odd spots. Caught another this morning and again, trap #2 is not touched. How many do you think there are? Should I just keep one set at all times and just rebait from time to time?

Those critters are smarter than you think. Most traps can become ineffective over time. Sounds like only 1 family though.

Outside. No evidence of any inside vermin.

Just be patient. Soon you’ll have plenty. They multiply quickly.

Yep, you have a few, but it's outside. Get a pellet gun, an ice cold beer and sit on your patio right as the sun goes down. They'll come to the feeder soon enough and you can shoot them off!

Seriously though, if you take away their food source they will travel somewhere else for food. Set some of the feeder poison stations out and soon enough they will have moved on/ died.

Man, I wish they would come out that early. These must have other houses on their dusk schedule. Would love to shoot some, and one of my pellet guns sits ready on the back porch.

Had a problem a few years back. It was 2 and just two. Left a trap out and never anything again. No issues since we got a dog again.

If outside it’s impossible to say coming from elsewhere probably.

Those have a hearts are great for this (I’m no lib) you can keep them baited and put them in plain sight so you can easily check them daily or more often. You’ll often catch squirrels and other things like birds.

We just dealt with this. Multiple bird feeders was our demise. So I loaded the place with those green rat bait things and ordered the 5 gals bucket top with swivel trap doors, put some water and anti freeze and baited the lid with peanut butter. That thing worked like a charm. Our problem was the outside neighborhood grass, is really soft and just has this tall grass growing, they were able to dig in the soft dirt and tunnel into our side yard. If you have a few you will have way more. Then the snakes will show up.

Update. Saw another rat on the pergola, so I reset the original ones I bought. Apparently, rust makes it possible for the critters to take all the bait and not get caught. Bought new traps and have caught two more much smaller rats. I guess it was a family? Anyway, this new style rocks. It's not scary AF to set them, and they must have a better trigger.
