Some people see mold today and flip out like they are going to die immediately if the entire house isn't remodeled. Its absurd how paranoid people are of basic normal light mold from some stale air or wet spot after a storm or whatever. I understand a house full of mold is really bad for you, but a spot of mold under a leaky window isn't the end of the world.

I don't know when HVAC's started being used or bleach was invented, but did people get sick with mold issues all the time or what was the treatment and methods? Just paint over it?

You want to use vinegar to kill mold. Bleach will kill it on the surface and make it look like it is gone but it does not penetrate into porous surfaces and the mold will come back. Vinegar will soak into the mold and kill it completely. Use full strength vinegar and let it soak 1 hr +.

Not entirely sold on that being a bad thing.

Bleach kills mold, I never said it doesn't. What bleach doesn't do is get into porous areas in effective concentrations to kill ALL of the mold and it will come back. Mold on tile, sure, bleach all day long. Mold on anything porous vinegar, especially 50 years ago. I don't want to hold 7th grade biology on how acids can kill molds, so you can figure that part out on your own.

Lot of laws giving tenants rights to have any mold professionally remediated at the cost of the landlord. Creates an incentive to be paranoid

Something as simple as a sinus infection could become deadly before the advent of antibiotics.

50 years ago there was a much higher percentage of houses with plaster walls. It does not react to water the same way as drywall, and is a real pain in the arse to replace. That has shifted greatly over the last 50 years, with virtually 0 new homes getting plaster and old plaster homes dying out or getting updated.

Our water remediation company told us they use strong peroxide to kill mold; the stuff often used by salons. I’ve never vetted but it wiped out the little we had.
