I've got some areas on the sides of my house where I don't want to maintain a bed, don't want to have a drip line (no gutters), and don't want to have to mow right up against the house.

My idea is to do about a 2' stretch of river rock away from the house that I will just kill everything that grows with roundup. But what kind of barrier works well between the rock and grass so I'm not launching rocks when I mow? I think I have heard something like this referred to as Cajun Gutters??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You may be thinking of a trench edge that looks like this pic. Problem is you have to maintain the trench which is a pain.

Steel Edging (or aluminum or plastic)is typically whats used as an edge. A Ledgestone edger (long, linear rock) looks really good but can cost a bit of money depending on what type of stone you get.

River Rock can look good but also consider a smaller ornamental gravel such as Tejas Black granite. There are several types of small diameter ornamental gravels available.:

Another option is to densely plant some ground cover like jasmine or monkey grass.

Jasmine, Vinca minor (periwinkle), or Sweet Woodruff are all great low-ish maintenance ground covers. Just throw in a physical edge border or even just hit em with the weed eater to edge them from time to time.

I've got this stuff in all my beds and transitions. You can get it in brown to blend with mulch or in green to blend with grass. I've used it on the last 2 houses I've lived in and can't recommend it enough. LINK

I've used linear rock before, and it looks good upon installation but after a year or 2 of settling it can get uneven, and grass/weeds will find a way to grow between every crack.
