Have any of you DIY a tile shower? Is it really difficult?

Thinking about ripping our an alcove shower and replacing it with a tile shower. It doesn't appear that difficult if you replace the shower base with a similar located drain and don't move the shower head and plumbing. I have done tile floors and some back-splashes. Am I missing something?

The key is to keep it from leaking. When I built Kerdi was the best thing going to prevent leaking, I don't know if that holds today or not.

It's not overly difficult. Get some Custom Building Products red guard to help waterproof the backer boards.

Not a problem watch some videos use the same color mastic thinset as you do grout. Watch videos on applying the thinset few simple tricks that will improve your outcomes if I find them I will post

Walls are a bit more difficult. Setting up pan is not that bad and there are kits. Just allow for time/days for the process. Smaller tiles can suck

Yeah me too. Buying a place on Belle River and the only thing I don’t like is the monstrous Jacuzzi garden tub and little bitty shower. Shits got to go

Walls need to be water proofed via Kerdi system or redgard over cement board. I personally prefer Kerdi over drywall. Follow instructions to a T. If you use Kerdi, use unmodified thinset. Lowes sells a "Decoupling Membrane Mortar" that works both under and over Kerdi.
Start on the back wall, use a 1x2board screwed into the wall to start the 2nd row from the bottom. This will ensure your tile pattern doesn't sag during application. Once mortar is dry, remove 1x2 and place the last row of tile at the base where the shower basin meets the wall. Honestly, the most important part is waterproofing. Watch Youtube videos of "Kerdi Membrane installation" and you'll see whats ahead.

True but i wouldn't recommend that a novice install very large tile either - little to no room for error. Have to get it perfect or it will be obvious and look bad. Also, larger grout joints are your friend.

Any certain video(s) you recommend.

I redid a bathroom floor, shower (floor to ceiling) and accents around a bathroom tub without ever having laid tile. It is not difficult at all.
