Had land that I will be building on forestry mulched 15 months ago. Have bush hogged several times. Lots of mulch on ground still, grows an insane amount of weeds, vines, privet, sweet gum regrowth…would it help to spray something now? And what chemical? While it’s thin, or wait till spring? Obviously want to encourage grass growth also. Thanks

How much longer until you start building?

If it is going to be a while it may not be worth it to keep up maintenance until you're ready.

You are going to have to scrape the mulch up. It will be the easiest and less time consuming. I just had to do it. Scraped it and burned it all. Now I have dirt that will grow grass

Spray it with 2-4D and mow it as often and low as you can. You do have to make sure that the chunks of wood are small enough to be decomposable and you will need to lime it as well

Man, that’s a lot to tackle. Composted forest products are probably going to grow a shite load of mushrooms. I’d consider scraping and bring in dirt, preferably sandy loam. As far as weeds go I’d nuke them now. Maybe a glyphosate/oust/trimec combo.

What grass would you like to grow? If you are talking about whatever grass naturally takes hold then it will be common bermuda.

The mulch stops the germination of seeds in the soil. The mulch needs to be burnt or raked and removed as another suggested.

Once it’s removed, prep the soil and either plant seed or Hydroseed the soil.

You have to then fix the weeds and plant or sod.

I just had about 1.5acres mulched that was completely overgrown with privet, tallow, blackberry and various hardwood volunteers. I think what I am going to do is leave the mulch down to keep the weeds at bay and just stay on top of the resprouting trash trees with salt or diesel. After a year or so once the mulch has broken down a bit I’m thinking native prairie grasses and wildflowers

You can spray it with remedy and diesel to kill everything then burn it off. You may want to disc it up several times a year to get the mulch to rot faster. Plant rye grass next fall.

We had our backyard done.

Piled up all the mulch in a low area and spread it. Brought in 60 yards of fill, 30 yards of top soil, then 9 pallets of sod.
