Goldfish Pond Cleaning
Does anyone have any knowledge on cleaning goldfish ponds? I've had one for 10 years now, but the last 2 years I've had green water like never before. I drained it last year and a few weeks ago and got as much of the rotted leaves and shite off the bottom as I could. Water was perfect for a week, now it's almost worse than it was. I used a water conditioner this year. I want to just fill in the hole and be done with it, but my little boys love it

do you have a pumping/filter system ? If so, split the outflow to a UV light made to go into ponds

I do, and that's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion

Yes- make sure your filter is sized right for the pond. And clean the filter media regularly. A UV “filter” is a needed addition in our heat. Also make sure you have enough plants. The plants and fish balance each other out and help keep the water stabilized. You can also get a water test kit which will tell you what parameters may be out of balance and need adjusting.

Also- How old are your boys? If old enough, put their trunks on them and let them get in every so often and clean debris off the bottom. And get the debris out before it sinks if possible.

What does your filter all have in it...mine has a box with these balls in it that are suppose to do something (do not recall the specific science terms)...have a coarse and fine filter in the box also...and yes I have always put in a few drops of the fish safe water treatment stuff as directed...ponds are fun and great for the kids...just do not put a stupid turtle in ..had a few expensive lilies in there waiting to bloom and thought a turtle would be cool...darn thing ate the stem on every Lilly and destroyed them ...did not even eat the pad....just them stem from pad to root...he moved back to the bayou!!!!

UV light. Also, goldfish are filthy fish. They will muck up a pond in an instant.

Sounds like I've got the exact same filter. I clean it once or twice a week and dump all the waste into my garden.
Reading the comments in here, I think one of my issues is I've lost some plants in it over the years. I need to replace some of those

From my old aquarium hobby days, the balls are in there to provide extra surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. The bacteria help with nitrite or nitrate removal. Can't remember which one.
