I’ve got a GE side by side that is approximately 13 years old. It came with our house when it was purchased and matched all of the other appliances. Day before yesterday the refrigerator and freezer stopped cooling. I cleaned the dust off of the compressor and motor. It started working until yesterday evening. I came home to a burnt plastic smell. Took the back off to see if I could see any burn marks and didn’t find any. I unplugged it and plugged it back up to see if anything was arcing. Didn’t see any. I looked at the control board and didn’t see any burn marks. I didn’t disconnect it to look at the back though. The front looked clean. My wife called the repair man today and he told her the control board had burn marks on the back and a little on the front. He leaves to get a price for a new board. He comes back with $165.00 for the board and $85.00 labor so $250 total. It sounds like my fridge is dead and it would be better to just get a new one. What are you guys’ opinion? And if a new one is in order what brand. Wife wants French doors with bottom freezer.

I had to replace my GE control board once. Mainly it was working OK, but the LED lights would not come on with the door open.
I think I paid about $200 for new board.
There also is an inverter board for the compressor that I had to change another time. Can't remember that cost, maybe $100 or more?

I’ve been told by multiple people to stay away from these and stick with the standard French door style.

They claim the ones with the freezer on the bottom don’t last. I have multiple friends that can testify to this. Appliance repair guys I know have said the same also.

That sounds like more than fair price for a refrig repair given the cost of a new refrig.

Only thing about a bottom freezer is the ice maker is in the refrigerator portion. I think this is part of the problems that these refrigerators have. Otherwise, I don't see any issues with them, nor any reason they wouldn't last any less amount of time than any other type or style. A side by side makes the least amount of usefulness of its space, due to the top to bottom divider between the two sides, rather than the shorter side to side divider a top or bottom freezer type refrigerator has.
