Any of y’all had luck cleaning and repairing a gas oven broiler before? I have a Kenmore gas oven range and when we try to use the broiler I can hear it light and feel warmth coming from the top vent but then shortly thereafter the smell of natural gas overwhelms us. I’m sure it’s something like a dirty something or clogged whatcha thingy, just never looked at how a gas oven works....

Well that should not be possible. Modern ovens have an igniter that only allows gas flow once the igniter reaches 3.2 amps.

I would 100% change the igniter as even if it does glow once the resistance builds and the amperage allowed through drops, the gas valve starts to act up. But it shouldn't allow more than 2 seconds of unburnt gas. Unless it's an old pilot light style oven.

I agree with this. I took my entire stove top and broiler apart before I discovered the fact that a certain number of amps are required for the gas to work. Anyway, there is literally nothing in there. It’s a box. Changed my igniter (even though it would glow red hot) fixed the problem right up.

Thanks for that. I’m guessing that it’s about 10-12 years old, as it came with the house. It’s a Kenmore Elite 4 burner. I called a local repair guy and he says he can come out tomorrow.

Update: igniter is glowing red and is hot enough to notice the warmth but there isn’t enough gas flow to light according to the really weird old long haired hippie type dude that came and looked at it. He says that he needs to replace both the valve and igniter.

Weird. I’ve read that those valves almost never go bad. I think the guy said (and it was a message board so TiFWIW) in over 20 years he has replaced hundreds of igniters and only 2 valves.
