I have a GE gas dryer that is about 5 years old (model GTDS820GD0WS) and suddenly stopped heating this morning. Drum turns fine but the heat will shut off a few minutes into the cycle.

I pulled off the rear of the dryer last night to vacuum out any lint and will try again this morning to see if the lint buildup was creating too much heat, affecting the internal thermostat.

Looking at YouTube, if that's not the issue, I need someone to replace any 1 of about 4 possible defective electronic components that run the gas dryer. I'm in Metairie if anyone has a good reference for a repair man who can be here this week.

I’ve used and recommend A&R Appliance. They repaired my Samsung dryer and had the OEM parts in stock. I live in NOLA too.

Drag that thing outside and put the blower and air compressor to it. Get the electronics, thermostats etc particularly. Remove the access panels and clean it well.

I have changed the solenoid valve on the gas line 3-4 times in 20* years. the coil gets weak and won't hold in open position(fail safe is closed). very easy fix, and parts online are cheap

I would guess this. Had the same issue, but only replaced once in 25 years.

This place is great, you've diagnosed it exactly. Unfortunately, the GE dryer is about 5 years old and the part includes both the gas valve and the coil mechanism, which costs about $250 altogether, plus labor, which is just about half what a new dryer costs (!)

It looks like a new gas dryer may be the best option. Any advice on where to get the best deal on 7+ cubic foot gas dryer, installed, that is not made by GE? Thanks for all your help.

If someone wants an otherwise nice GE dryer, I'll make you a great deal to get rid of this one.

And therein lies the main problem with most crap built today. It is nothing more than buy, break, replace since the parts to fix it make it not a feasible option most times.

Unless you can find a dryer for that price, fixing it makes most sense.

There is hate for every brand but I have had more luck with GE than other brands.

With labor, total repair cost would be $350-$400.

Unfortunately it doesn't make sense these days to repair when repair costs approach 30 - 40% of buying new, plus you don't get any assurance that something else won't break on your appliance tomorrow that makes your repair a waste.

It makes sense to repair from a financial standpoint but sometimes you just want something newer and nicer. New things are always nice to have.
