Garden help. No vegetables.
Posted by thejudge on 6/23/22 at 6:57 pm00
Hey yall.
So as the title says my garden is growing but producing nothing.
Plenty of water and fertilizer/nutrients.
We usually don't have this problem.
Wife went and got flowers to attract some bees. She is convinced that's that's issue.
We raked in rabbit crap before we started and tilled.
Grass has taken over from what I'm assuming came from the rabbit shite the wife insisted on putting in there.
Thanks.

most likely if it has good water then your soil lacks the nutrients it needs
its not rocket science, its either water or nutrient deficiencies
Very well could also be due to heat issues this time of year. With the OP not saying how long the garden has been planted or what exactly is planted there is no real definitive answer.
I can tell you my tomatoes are done, as are my cucumbers. The pole beans are fading, bell peppers are getting sun scorched, but hot peppers and okra are doing fine.
Lots of things don't do well this time of year due to heat, humidity and fungal issues.

The heat is killing damn everything.
You can try fertilizer with a high phosphorus (middle number).

This. About the only things still growing in my garden are hot peppers, okra, purple hulls, watermelon, and cantaloupe. Most of my spring veggies have petered out.

Tomatoes, cucumber, banana peppers, and bell peppers.
Squash never took off.
We did plant late.
Maybe they are just done.
Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, definitely too damn hot for tomatoes and cucumber right now. Peppers should be OK and bell peppers would do better if they had a bit of shade to keep the peppers from getting sun scald.
As for the squash, did you have any issues with Squash Vine Borers that took the plants out early? That's the one reason I hardly ever get a decent amount of squash in the summer. Much different with winter varieties though and they do much better.
Banana peppers should be making - you spray them with epsom salt water? In the past for me the magnesium deficiency really hurt my plants, they couldn’t seem to set fruit, once I started watering with a table spoon of epsom salt it helped.

Had the same problem last year and year before. Got a soil test. PH was too high. lSU said to add some ammonium sulfate to lower PH. Did that in the late winter and before planting in spring and garden is productive as hell again. The yellow squash and bell peppers are incredible this year. But I also laid down some slug/snail bait all around any vine vegetable plants and fruits.

That ph might explain why for a couple years it was awesome and now I got shite.
I did plant late and as someone mentioned it probably screwed me.
Garden is in full sun but it looks green and tall and healthy.
I think I'll get the soil tested and move on from there.
Bees are finally showing up. There were absolutely zero when we planted. When I put the pool up is when they showed up. I'm nabove getting a baby pool next time and putting water in it to bring them in to pollinate.

It’s hot.
I pulled up my cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, and bell peppers today. They have been finished for a couple weeks now, just got around to it.

Vine borers wiped out my row of squash, sun scald working over my bell peppers and Marconis. Snap bean foliage looks like crap, but they are loaded. Tomatoes are about done and getting worked over by birds. It’s just too damn hot to sit in shed and pic them off.

I was always told to just till in the tomatoes for next year. I pull everything else.
Should I be pulling the tomatoes too?
Old man told me everything a tomatoes needs to grow is in the plant and to just plan over the old till the following year..

Yes. Tomatoes are disease prone this time of year and you don’t want to till anything into the soil that can overwinter and cause problems in the future. Don’t even compost them. Pull them, bag em, and throw them in the trash just to be sure.

Damn thanks for that.
Last two years I've been tilling them in. I'll pull these this year and clean it all out.
I appreciate you replying.

I see most people mentioning the crazy heat killing the plants.
In SWLA, would it be smarter to have your garden getting shade late afternoon?

Probably.
There is one section of my yard that I have a spot for a garden. There isnt sade there.
The previous years it's been fine.
I've never had nothing produce. We are talking like a half zone tomatoes and 1 cucumber.
That's it.
