Might not be the right board for this.

Moved into a new place, so of course I’m updating my TV.

Don’t want to mount it on the wall. Would prefer to have it covered when not in use.

What are my options? TV lift (expensive!) or armoire? Will have to be big enough to fit a 50-55 inch TV.

A big entertainment type cabinet with sliding doors that open and slide into the cabinet by the TV and out of the way.

ETA: Look into TV cabinets with pocket doors.

Quick look online and thought I found something under $2000 but it was for a 46 inch. Looks like $3500 or more for the lift types for that size

Could build that for way under $500.

TV Lift Cabinet

You could do something like this. Just build a base/cabinet or maybe use an old dresser and install the lift.

I got a piece of furniture that holds my 70" and could handle an 80" if I wanted, just pick out the TV, measure the base and go from there

mine doesn't fit this criteria though, you always see the TV

Yep, you and I could, but just how many people here have a full woodworking shop at their disposal. Probably like you, all I have to do is walk downstairs and open my shop door and get to work.

cheapest motorized lift I found was $165. SO could you build that with the motorized lift then sell it for under $500?

I don't have the tools to start with. Even if I did it's likely I am don't have skills (at least not anymore, haven't done any real woodworking in a couple of decades) to end up with a decent looking piece.

Plus I'm not looking for it

Would have been a fun project to do, though.

Depends on what grade of wood and size along with if they would like shelving in front or what not. But yes, I can come very close to that if I didn't charge for my time.

Things like this, I enjoy building.

Yep. Those brother-in-law prices will make you go broke in the long run.

I can't tell you how much of my time and skill I've basically given away over the years trying to help people out, but I'm not complaining, just mentioning.

And I've seen your work and am pretty sure you're upside down like me when it comes to family and friends.
