Right now I have carpet grass and a collection of weeds that make up my lawn. Is there an easy fix such as overseasing that will eventually give me an actual lawn with grass? If so what grass type would be best in south Louisiana to do this with? Zoysia, Centipede, or Bahia? I have areas in full sun and areas that get about 4 to 6 hours of sun.

I really don’t want to spend the money on sods or plugs for the whole yard. It’s just too much area.

easy fix? no. it will take quite a bit of manual labor, time, water, etc. to fix a lawn but it is worth it if you like having nice grass.

Do you mind watering a lawn to keep it healthy?

Get a soil test and see what your ph is. Then depending on your ph you can decide which grass you want to go with.

How big is your yard? Do you have neighbors? If you planted a Bahia grass lawn next to me I’d be pissed

I don’t mind.
Labor and time is not as big of a deal as money. But I don’t want to waste either. For example, I don’t want to overseas if it’s likely to be unsuccessful.

Half an acre surrounded by woods.

I'd focus on leveling the yard first and foremost.
I'd also recommend pulling soil samples and sending them in to LSU Ag for analysis. Follow what they recommend for the variety of grass you choose. Get the soil right, kill the weeds, incorporate seeds for new grass, and water the heck out of it. Im sure there are several youtube videos that show the process.
Centipede or Bermuda are you best options down here for starting from seed.

You could focus on controlling the weeds and manage the carpetgrass as a least expensive alternative to St Aug, Centipede or Zoysia. Bermudagrass won’t thrive in the more shaded areas, nor will centipede.

Carpetgrass can produce an acceptable lawn Carpetgrass though I don’t recall anyone posting on this board with a carpet grass lawn. Then if you choose to move to another lawn grass down the road you can pursue that.

Regardless, to establish any type of lawn grass effectively you’ll need to deal with the weeds first. You won’t be able use Celsius herbicide for weed control on a carpetgrass lawn. I agree with others, pull some soil samples from the lawn to see where you stand with soil pH and general soil fertility. Pre-emergent herbicides in mid-Sept/mid-Oct, and again in mid-Feb (south LA), and appropriate post -emergent herbicides throughout the year as needed for whatever lawn weeds you are dealing with - and they will be needed.

I just realized I have carpetgrass. I was suspicious that it wasn't St. Aug, but didn't want to believe it. Haha. Came home from vacation and noticed the carpetgrass seedheads.

Is there any downside to carpetgrass? I have 16k sq ft of it so I have to live with it. It doesn't look bad. Glad I have been dragging arse on getting Celsius, woulda nuked my entire yard!

Good looking lawn - I would say that’s a plus for the OP if he can get his carpetgrass lawn to look that good. You must mow your grass frequently to just have noticed the unique seed head of carpetgrass.

Downside - frequent mowing to suppress the seedhead? That’s how I first noticed patches of it growing in my backyard mixed with St Augustine - Celsius cleaned it out after a few sprays.

I do cut it often, but I have noticed the seedheads before and never thought anything of it. I believe someone on here posted a picture of the seedhead and I was like hmmmmm that looks familiar. Got back from vacation and there was no denying it, those seedheads covered my yard.

Had my doubts (could never find runners) it wasn't St. Aug, but I didn't know what the hell else it could be since it looked so close to St. Aug. Never even heard of carpetgrass until I started reading this forum.

I would take your lawn in a heartbeat if mine looked like that.

You won't be able to use some herbicides on carpetgrass. Celsius is one and that reason alone is why I wouldn't have a carpetgrass lawn. However, since you already have it you can manage it just fine.

Here is what LSU Agcenter says about caring for carpet grass:

LINK

The main things are cut it no higher than 2" and don't over fertilize. Very similar to centipede.
