Building my man cave/kitchen and need to get some cabinets. Weighing my options to see if it's worth it to buy unfinished cabinets or just bite the bullet and buy finished.

Is it worth it to finished them myself? I'm looking more for prefabbed cabinets over custom at this point due to price and time to complete. Any recommendations of places around Lafayette to go look? Been to Surplus Warehouse and lowes already. May check out E&E cabinets tomorrow.

How much is your time worth? Finishing cabinets, though not hard, is a bit time consuming. If painting, you'll need a primer coat, sand that down, then probably 2 top coats to make them look nice and uniform in color.

If staining and clear coating, it's a bit more work. I would not stain them without first laying down some piss-coat shellac and sanding that smooth------then stain. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly and then come back with at least a couple coats of poly to protect them.

The reason for the piss-coat of shellac is to allow the stain to be absorbed into the wood more evenly if going with certain woods that tend to take stain unevenly, like pine or cypress.

You can get a decent finish brushing the product on if using a real good brush for the job, but you can't beat spraying to get the best finish.

Most people do not realize that they can get custom cabinets at a better price point than what the big box has to offer. Prefab cabinets are mostly laminated mdf. or if made out of real wood they cut corners in build quality for competitive pricing. This is why most GC's use custom shops instead of Big Box.

Where custom cabinets sky rocket in the price is the wood used and the details. (dovetail drawers, profiles, hardware etc.)

A set of custom all plywood paint-grade cabinets made with poplar frames and shaker style doors can be quite reasonable.

I am willing to bet we can get you a nice set of cabinets that beats big box store prices.

This. If anything, make sure you at least talk to a shop. They can certainly make an economical set for you that will be much better than prefab.
