Building new construction soon and was wondering if anyone has experience with a surge protector that goes in your main electrical panel to protect the entire house?

Waste of money? Worth it?

Get a stand alone (Larger) whole home surge protector in a separate panel. The ones that plug into the panel do not provide sufficient protection.

Totally worth it if you want to provide some protection to your electronic equipment from power surges. Now, a friend had a close strike, submitted a claim to his insurer and got all new electronics. So maybe insurance and a strike every ten years is best.

I got a direct strike in 2018, not sure if whole home ones are rated for that sort of load.

10k worth of electronics, roof repair, electrical repair.

Nothing is rated for a lightning strike.

This isn't true. The main difference between them is how long they last, especially if you have an underground service to your house.

It’s actually code as of the 2020 NEC (Louisiana is on 2014 code, so a while before it’s mandatory here). If you are in South Louisiana you should get at least 140kva protection. Nothing is going to help if lightening hits very near your house, but if you live somewhere with an aged electrical grid, it will definitely be worth it to protect against transient surges, and it will help protect against lighting that isn’t too close. For only a couple hundred, why not do it?
