Dallisgrass help
Posted by Purpleblooded on 5/1/20 at 10:27 am00
Put sod in front yard but didn’t in back yard. Dallisgrass is getting out of hand in back yard. Should I till and start over? Anything will kill just the dallisgrass?

Tribute Total and MSMA will kill Dallisgrass. It will also kill your grass if you have St Aug or centipede but it doesn't sound like you have grass.
Best option might be glyphosate, wait two weeks, glyphosate anything that isn't dead, wait two weeks, till and sod.

My front yard is centipede. What to spot spray that won’t kill centipede?

Celcius will stunt/suppress Dallis in centipede

2 to 3 treatments this year will get you a long ways. I added 2 ounces of surfactant to be sure it draws it all the way into the roots. Cleared up about 1k sq ft in my front yard 2 years ago and have only had to dig up 4 so far this spring. It's amazing how well it has worked.

The problem with pulling it up is that the runners for the root system run deep and long, and if you don't get every bit of that it will just grow off that for the next season. I just started using TruGreen, and they sprayed my whole yard with Celsius. I went back a month later and spot sprayed a few areas with sethoxydim (was given advice on using that from a poster here who knows his shite). I can see every area that has dallisgrass starting to die and wither away. Be sure to use some sort of surfactant.

I just took concentrated Glyphosate and a glove and rubbed a bunch of Dallisgrass patches with it. I rubbed just the grass blades and I can confirm it killed it all. Now I plan on going back and filling in the dead patches with St. Aug sod.

sethoxydim Plus what surfactant would work? Will this kill centipede?
re: Dallisgrass helpPosted by lsurulzes88 on 5/2/20 at 5:41 pm to Purpleblooded
Non ionic surfactant from the garden supply store is what I use.
re: Dallisgrass helpPosted by CrawDude on 5/2/20 at 6:22 pm to Purpleblooded
Sethoxydim is safe on centipede. Hi-Yield spreader-sticker (surfactant) is sold at most independent garden centers and hardware stores in my area, but oil concentrate is usually what is recommended for mixing with sethoxydim in a 1:1 ratio.
I’ve never seen sethoxydim recommended for control of Dallisgrass, though Boo says it works for him. But if it doesn’t work on Dallisgrass for you it is good for controlling Bermudagrass and crabgrass in centipede lawns so if you have any issues with those two it won’t be a wasted purchase.

Craw will chime in but just in case you are looking to do a “buy now” sort of thing. I don’t use ferti-lome but does the label say sethoxydim? Grass killer doesn’t sound grass friendly.

Yes - that is the sethoxydim product by Fertilome. Just double check the label on the front to make sure it says sethoxydim.

These brands are carried by independent garden centers, and many good hardware stores in my area of Baton Rouge - not implying they are any better than any other name brand containing the same active ingredients - it’s just that they are easy to find in my area.

Now that dallis grass is dying what’s your next advise? Dig up and sod the spots?
