So we recently moved out onto 20 acres, wife wanted chickens. First batch we got was unsexed, so of course we got 5 roosters out of 6 chickens. I grew up in the country but we never had chickens but I can remember neighbors basically just culled and ate the roosters and kept 1 or 2.

So here we are now, the roosters all have names via the wife. They are now complete assholes establishing the pecking order. No fault to the chicken it's their nature. One rooster is everyone's bitch and if we let him in the general population it ain't pretty. There is a clear alpha and beta, the alpha is a dick to everyone, beats up hens and everything.

So here is my thought and where I need help from the chicken guys or duck hunters. My plan is to take the .22 pop 3 roosters, pluck them, eat them.

Is there a better way than the gun? Any tips on plucking these big arse bastards?

Buy sexed chicks next time.

You need one rooster. Keep the best-natured rooster, the most alpha which doesn't peck on the hens. Catch the others and wring their necks by hand, there is a method using a rebar on the ground to break the neck, if the bird is calm enough (find it on YouTube). Best to go into the coop at night, if a small coop, otherwise you may need to use a noose pole to catch them. Harvesting an animal can be difficult for some people, but it is necessary.

If you're too chicken to wring necks then blast the bird in the head with rat shot. Whatever is most humane for the bird, because the meat will taste better when cooked.

You need a machete and a stump.
Pick up rooster by the feet and dangle him over the stump.
He will lift his head to look around...hover right over the stump and chop, then throw him in the yard to flop around a few minutes. Pick him up and dip in a bucket of hot water (helps the feathers come off), pluck, gut, quarter and cook!
I've never heard of someone actually shooting their own chickens.

The best way that I have found is to use a set of pruning shears…the kind that you cut branches with. Be prepared for the chicken to flop around for about a minute or so after the deed is done.

We use to grab them by the head and whipped them in a circle while holding on. The head will come off the the chicken will bounce around for a while. Saves a bullet.

We got a rooster in a sexed group one time.

He ran at me one time being aggressive so I grabbed him and smacked his head again the coop hard.

ETA: I’m a duck hunter and when the dog brings back a live bird, we’d smack their head against the blind or pit to dispatch them.

Kill them however. Dispose of them. By now they are tough. Not worth the trouble. Next time buy pullets/biddies.You only need one rooster!

Had a Rhode Island Red rooster that thought he was a bad arse. Ran at me a couple of times. It all stopped when I kicked a 35 yard field goal. He had a different attitude after that.

It was our first batch and honestly we thought we would have better luck than damn 5/6 being roosters. We had homes for 3 of them and they all backed out. Next 6 we got were pullets.

if you can get them in a cage generally you can bring them to the feed store and they’ll give them away. Otherwise, a machete and a stump

Sexing is not an exact science. Bought 20 hens from reputable farm supply, and got 3 roosters out of that bunch. Raccoons and hawks are your enemies now. Somehow they never kill the roosters.

Grab chicken by feet hanging upside down and wait for it to calm down.

Lay shovel on ground spade pointing up.

Put the head under the handle where the head is sitting right side up on the ground.

Foot on the handle, jerk straight up and you'll hear a pop.

Wait for spasms to stop and you're done. No blood, no mess.

I've plucked and it's a pain but best way to get most of the meat.

You can also cut skin and just harvest breast and quarters. There's youtube videos out there.

When you kill him put him under a 5 gallon bucket (upside down) then pull his head out to chop off. Stand on bucket until flopping stops. Keeps from getting blood everywhere and you don’t have to chase down a headless chicken.

Kill ALL the roosters and get sexlinks next time.

Either shoot them or ring their necks.

Roosters are such mega dicks. I hate them.

I wait until night time when they go in the coop. I grab them off the roosting bars and ring their neck. It beats trying to catch them during the day. I do this every 3 years once they stop laying that much and move in a new batch

wring the neck, let sit for a few minutes flopping around, then cut the head off.
