1) Called a local company about getting my ducts cleaned. They're dusty, and we've been having some crawlspace mildew smells lately. I talked with the girl on the phone and she said they do a general cleaning for $99. I just assumed since I called about getting the ducts cleaned that the general cleaning was included. Of course it wasn't, and they did some routine inspection and cleaned the condenser coil.

2) I called to complain and the manager called back and said he'd review the phone call and would refund my money if it sounded like I asked for ductwork cleaning and was quoted $99. He then said it would be around $4000 to get my ductwork cleaned. I said that sounded crazy because I got two new units in my old rental house for $7000 and he said it'd be about $12k-$15k to get one new unit with new ductwork.

Is that true? $4000 to vacuum dust and mold and mildew out of ductwork of a single family home?

That sounds outrageous.

Also, can I do it myself? The crawlspace smell is embarrassing.

It’s a waste of money just replace the duct work

It’s not my house. Landlord’s not going to replace it or pay to get it cleaned.

Would it really cost $4000 just to clean them? That’s absurd.

I got a quote of almost $1000 to clean my ducts and $2800 to replace. I just replaced Bc they said it wasn’t guaranteed that the cleaning would work

this is the correct answer ^^^^^^^^

the flex duct costs around $25-$35 each depending on size for the 50ft length bag (which actually only gives you about 40ft of usable length)

they cost to replace the duct with brand new is the same as cleaning which knocks most of the dust out but not the stale funky smell in them.

Hes trying to take u for a ride.

Why would u have mildew and mold in something in the attic? My first house was built in 1950..., I sold it last year. I added a drop on the existing duct and saw little dust in it.... much less mold/mildew.

If you had a smoker in there, I could see a problem. Otherwise, unless u have the shittiest place evar, I dont see that being a problem.

It’s in the crawlspace.

I live in a 2 story built in the 70s. Our upstairs vents all had bad mildewy stuff on outside of them on ceilings and we got just our upstairs ones cleaned. $350 was the cost

Curious, if you have a mildew problem wouldn’t that signify a moisture issue associated with the HVAC that cleaning the duct work won’t correct? Might you not be better off looking into a an inexpensive portable dehumidifier that you could put in the crawlspace to potentially deal with the moisture/mold/mildew/smell issue? You’d have to do some homework to see how best to accomplish this, but you mention it’s a rental with a landlord refusing to make any improvements to the property, so I’m sure you don’t want want to come out of pocket very much. Just food for for thought.

I've thought about this. It's not just the mildew smell, but I've looked inside the vents (had one collapse last week that I posted here about) and they are covered in fluffy dust. But the mildew smell is bad too.

You're right that I don't want to spend too much, but if we're going to be here another year, I'd be willing to shell out extra money for health purposes.

I understand. Flexible duct (not rigid)? If so its my understanding flex duct can not be effectively cleaned (rigid ductwork can be cleaned) and would need to be replaced. Other posters have alluded to this.

Should cost around $60-70 per register. Includes cleaning registers, ductwork, and plenum. Coil should also be cleaned. $250 or more if coil needs to be pulled and cleaned. Lake Charles area

We have ours cleaned after construction by our HVAC vendor. They use some reverse pressure device on the unit and go through every duct in the house with a tool that gets all the shite out. On our average house it fills up almost a large garbage bag.

We pay $1000 a house. Average house is between 4000-5000 ft2.

Rigid ductwork or flexible ductwork, or both?
