Converting Bahaiagrass to bermuda - MSM/Pre-emergent related
Good Afternoon.

Have a few questions about converting a mostly Bahaiagrass front yard to bermuda.

I want to apply MSM and then apply a pre-emergent to kill off anything else. Then I want to disk and rake the roots out (necessary?) before seeding in rye grass for the winter. My plan is to over-seed the rye with bermuda in the spring.

My question(s):
1 - How long do I need to wait after applying per-emergent before seeding rye?
2 - Best pre-emergent for preventing future bahaiagrass?
3 - how long should I wait after applying pre-emergent should I wait to disk?

Many thanks

Why use MSM vs Glyphosate?

If you’re planning to seed, I’d want to avoid a pre-em. Most of them would take a few weeks or so before you could seed. And I’d think once you could seed, they are basically ineffective. So you’re not really accomplishing much since you’ll have nothing to “fill-in” during that period.

Ignorance, basically. Ill look into glyphosate.

Per-emergent thought was to combat any future grown till winter rye could come up. Thanks for the response. A lot of information out there and just trying to figure out best approach.

Sorry Tiger I fat fingered the downvote when I meant to upvote. Definitely do not want to use Pre M 4 months before or 4 months after as it can definitely lower the germination rate. If you disc I would plan on rolling prior to seeding if not you will have a severe uneven cutting service. Instead of disc, do you have access to a Harley Rake? I had a guy Harley rake my 2 acres for $500.

I was hoping someone else would answer because this is tough and lengthy. You should round up the whole area if you want Bahia gone. Bahia is a paspalum grass. Dallisgrass is also a paspalum grass. Pre em won’t work on it. You wouldn’t get rye to germinate if you used a pre em any way. My best suggestion is to round up early in the spring (April 1st) and then sod tif 419. If you don’t want to sod I’d seed Arden 15 but that is costly. $50 for 2lbs of seed. You will get shitty germination rates from big box store seed.

There is a poster here, and I’m very sorry I can’t recall who, hydroseeded his lawn with Bermuda and it looks awesome. I am not an expert on hydroseeding but he could help.

Appreciate the replies. Ill take pre-emerge off the list.

I've debated hydroseed.

I live close to the MS river and seepage is a real pain in the arse in the spring. Cant put anything heavy on it. I am going to disk out a bunch of old ruts (use to be pasture). I have a landscape rake and have made pretty good progress on my dad's lot with disking it repeatedly and getting it pretty fine. Used the rake to drag it around and level it out.

Again, thanks for the responses.
