Cement/Hardy Board Paint

Sherwin Williams makes a primer called Loxon that is kind of expensive, but formulated for cement board. The primer layer seems to get sucked up nicely but the paint glides on after that. The Loxon is made for the porous surface and the alkaline cement and prevents the surface from getting ashy.

My neighbor clad his house in Hardy smooth weatherboards a few years ago when he decided to remove the vinyl that was over the cypress weatherboards and saw it was not cost effective to save and prep the cypress boards.

The contractor painted the Hardy an avocado green color and about 6 months later the owner decided to close in an open area and make an outdoor kitchen, once again using Hardy smooth weatherboards.

He used the same paint so it would match, or so he thought as the original painted area was several shades lighter than the newly applied paint. It does seem to fade pretty quickly, but all paint, once applied and exposed to the elements will fade.

If using flat paint, it will look faded quicker than if using a semi-gloss or eggshell type finish is my experience. It will also hold dirt a bit easier with the flat finish since it isn't as slick as the paint with a bit of sheen to it.

My brother-in-law checked into Rhino Shield for his house but found it to be cost prohibitive, but he's got an old wood clad house that is 2 story and built old N.O. style with high ceilings, so there's a lot of area to cover.

Would never use that produce. Reason, it's a rubber base produce. By spraying and coating wood, one is trapping moisture behind the coating. To me, over time the wood will rot out. Maybe I wrong, but not willing to find out.

Not sure what the contractor did, but we built 5 years ago and has not faded one bit.

Actually, I may be misleading now that I think about it. Pretty sure ours came prepainted in one of Hardies standard colors. It is one of the darker colors (evening blue) but they may do something different/longer lasting when they prepaint it.

I just built a shed And want to match the paint. I kept a 1’ piece of original Hardie siding from construction in the attic and they’re the same still. I just compared the other day.

need to make sure a primer is used / sherwin williams satin paint/ painting my house tomorrow
previous paint guy did not use a primer/ faded in about 2 years and turned ashy/ painter also recommended not to paint it in the heat of the day/ paint will not adhere well- ashy results
