Anyone ever crack a cast iron pot before? On vacation and brought mine along for stew. Put it in the stove to start heating and heard a big pop. Look over and it’s cracked. How does that happen?

Thermal shock. Probably happened before you used it this time. Weld it or get a new one

Yes. About three years ago I put it on a hotplate to cook outside. Heard the same pop...was shocked because I had had it for 30+ years. It sits in my cactus garden getting rusty...

Makes sense. It was a dam electric stove that I had it on heating it to make a roux. It’s an old one also. Damn

you cant overheat cast iron, it just glows red

that said, if there was a crack in it, then heating will make it break off so it must have been dropped or something before you used it

No but if you add cold liquid to a hot pot you can crack it. Probably what happened then he noticed it the second time he heated it.

Unless one of the kids dropped it it wasn’t. I’ll have to ask. It was at least 20 years old and I used it 2 weeks ago. Just wondering if had something to do with the electric burners. Maybe they did drop it. Just strange. As it was a pound pop

Take it as an opportunity to buy some of the new cast iron that is exceptionally well made... Stargazer, Smithey and Field & Company are a few to look at.
