Anybody a bucket gardener for tomatoes that is will to share a soil recipe? I’ve been mainly using my crappy soil mixed with peat 50/50 and fertilizing with Espoma Tomato Tone. I’ve had poor production and some blossom end rot despite very even moisture. I don’t have compost pile. What do you use? Thanks for advice!

Mix in Black Kow with a good potting soil....add little calcium nitrate. Feed weekly with Miracle Grow for Tomatoes should help.

What varieties are you growing. From my experience, unless you are growing a dwarf determinate or "container" variety, a 5 gallon bucket is just not big enough of a container for most tomato plants. Large determinates and especially indeterminates have really large root systems. Once they get big enough it is almost impossible to keep them happy in a 5 gallon bucket.

Yellow pear and sweet 100s did the best. Have had some production off Cherokee Purple. Carolina gold and German queen were bad. Both indeterminates. I’m sure you are right. Those root systems were huge when I’ve cleaned them out at end of seasons past. Any recommendations on determinant varieties for next year? Also will try the black kow and potting mixture. Just don’t want too much nitrogen because I’ve made that mistake before. Thanks for the recs

The only determinates I grow regularly are Roma’s. But they can still get some size to them and may end up becoming difficult to care for in a container as they mature. I’ve also grown Better Bush and Bush Early Girl. Better Bush will get a decent size (about 4’ tall) and require support. They are the better tasting of the two. But the Bush Early Girl is more compact, and it yields a ton of tomatoes. It’s a decent tasting tomato. I have never grown them in containers, but I have a feeling the Bush Early Girl would fair better than the Better Bush in a bucket.

If in 5 gallon buckets you need bigger containers. I use empty cattle protein tubs. 25 gallons each.

I like Black Velvet soil for containers.
