biggest wasp nest ever inside my propane tank cover

no pics because..frick THAT. checked my propane tank for the first time since winter (500 gallon tank, needle barely moves in the summer) and when i flipped the thing open the entirety of the inside was a massive wasp nest.

i'm usually a 'live and let live' kind of person when it comes to outside bugs but i just calmly (or maybe no so calmly) sashayed away to my garage and emptied an entire can of hornet spray into it then slammed the fricking thing shut.

i'll open it again in october.

Not to change the subject, but what are you running with propane? I'm getting ready to build a house and deciding what size tank and what all to hook up to it.

i dont have NG where i live unfortunately so i'll give you a quick rundown:

- pool heater. frick. THAT. disconnected with the quickness. raises the pool about 1 degree every 2 days in the spring and guaranteed you'll refill the tank every 15-30 days.

- HVAC 1 and 2. i had one running propane and the other heat pump but when i replaced the second unit i opted for gas. i think it was a mistake. i didn't do the research and found out it was a minor engineering feat to get enough propane from my tank (way to the left of my house in front of the pool and down the hill next to the street) all the way clear to the other end (4200sf house; single level) so it cost about $2K to run the propane that far and fix how large the pipe was connected to the house to ensure both units would get sufficient propane if they were both running at the same time. CADfail.

- *almost* replaced my porch lights with gas torches but changed my mind at the last minute

- stove best decision i made since moving into the house was to run a line to my kitchen and remove the electric glass top range. we love the gas range more than anything.

- connector for BBQ grill. haven't tied it in yet because we need to build a deck over this area first because its uneven and slopes downward and other projects have taken priority

- almost ran a T to the back porch to support a gas heater then i saw how much propane it would use and decided to install an electric overhead heater instead. knowing my wife, she would turn it on then forget about it for several hours.

that's it. both water heaters are electric and neither are easy to convert to gas so i left those alone.

eta *ALWAYS* shop around for propane companies and talk to your neighbors. many companies will quote you a low price initially but you want to go with one that won't jack your rates after the first year. its amazing to me that i have tons of neighbors paying $4/gallon for a name brand propane company and I'm paying $1.50 for a little mom & pop operation. the only time i interact with them is to schedule a delivery and pay the bill and as long as they are coming through on that, why would i go with a company charging $4/gallon? 75% fill of a 500 gallon tank means they're paying $1,500 for a fill up and I'm paying $562.

Get a can of Bengal roach spray and empty it in there. Works just as well on wasps and penetrates every nook and cranny. The wasp spray requires a direct shot. The Bengal is more of a fog.

You've got half the solution sitting right underneath the nest.

Stove/oven, water heater and backup furnace are good starting points.

You can generally get a nice discount from providers if you install 1,000 Gallons of storage on site.

I think I read somewhere that you should wait until dark to attack the nest with bug spray because the wasps can't attack at night. But be careful, I'm not sure that it's true that wasps can't attack at night.

You do it at night because the wasps are away from the nest during the day doing wasp things. I always try to kill em when they are roosting!

They’re much less active/aggressive in the early morning or late evening.
