I have a "manual" iron gate across my driveway, but it's a bifold. I'm looking to go automatic so that it's actually useful. What is the rough cost these days of a basic driveway gate? Are there any decent DIY kits?

I have a mighty mule for mine. Although it is for a single gate. They make them for dual. $500+ for dual set up

My old house had a GTO ("gates that open"), DIY'd by the previous owner. It was a long swing gate across a driveway, basically a section of iron fencing that was hinged at one end to a tall post, with a support cable running from the top of the post down to the gate about 2/3 of the way from the post. (To keep it from sagging) It closed tight against another post. Best part was the timer---you pressed once to open, then it had a 10 second delay before it shut automatically. Plenty enough time to pull in or out of the driveway, or to roll the trash to the curb.

Looks like you can get the swing arm mechanism and controls for less than $1,000: LINK I paid $150 for the section of iron fencing I used to replace the ugly plastic used by the previous homeowner.

I've done 2 of these over the years. Both professionally installed not DIY. The GTO 2as about 2500 and worked for about 2 years, then started giving me issues.
The last one was a Liftmaster, was about 3k and I have had zero issues about 2.5 years in.

I have a ghost controls brand. It’s been great. I did all the wiring and install myself. Their customer service has been awesome and they have lifetime warranties on the electric motors. You can order for amazon and they have YouTube videos of all their installation instructions.

How about you slap some grease on those hinge pins first.
