Are hybrid hot water heaters worth it?

Trying to decide between a 50 gallon conventional, smart, and hybrid water heater.
It's time to buy one, but the kids will be moving out before too many more years. So I kinda need a 50 gallon now, but won't in a few years.
Anyone have one?
Price difference I'm looking at is a smart one for 615 with a 12 yr warranty vs a hybrid for 1250 with a 12 yr warranty.

Would the conventional be natural gas?
If you have natural gas there is a good chance there is no payback.

No, it's going to be electric. If it was gas, I'd probably look at a tankless.
