And eventually harvested from it?

Doing some reading and it seems to take many years with the chance of it not producing at all

Is it possible to grow one in Southeast Texas?

I did once in BR, but not to bearing age, which is about 7 years. They cannot take any cold weather. I grew mine for 3 years, and built a cold frame around it and covered it with plastic film, but did not heat it. It eventually got killed. It was about 6-7 feet tall. Beautiful tree, but it is a true tropical.
Where are you in TX?

Well there are plenty in South Texas. Brother in law has a nice orchard in Uvalde and I couldn’t tell you how many we bulldozed around Harlingen over the years.

Plant a few and be patient.

I got this far with one in Abita Springs and the same thing happened. You would have to build a true greenhouse over it with a giant heater to have a chance.

Have seen them in large pots down here. Have to freeze protect like mad though when we actually have freezes

My buddy had one in a house he bought in Algiers Point. That thing made some avocados. I think they might have some that are more cold tolerant, but I'm. Not sure.

When I first met my wife and went to her house down in Arabi, her next door neighbor had 2 of them right on the property line and they were mature trees about 20 ft. tall.

They bore some great avocados and were very plentiful. The old guy told her anything on her side was fair game, so she had LOTS of avocados when they were doing their thing.

I know it takes 2 and it takes years but I know of several down here in ST James that made it and bear fruit. Once tehy get pretty big they are not as susceptible to freeze but like citrus a freeze will kill em and we get that kind of freeze every 5 or more years apart.

Started this about a year and a half ago from the pit of an avocado.

Avocados attract rats. Give it to your neighbor, and let him give you the extras.

I planted one this year, it has two avocados on it now. Pretty big grafted tree in a 15 gallon pot (around 8 feet tall and not cheap). This is in the Florida panhandle and it's supposed to be good down to 15 degrees. There are several cold tolerant varieties (Joey, Lila, etc) that are grown for nurseries and come out of the San Antonio area. One grown from a supermarket avocado is not going to have a chance below freezing. I was told that mine will be sensitive to cold the first few winters and to bury the roots good, but that after it is established it should be good for anything down to 15 degrees and we almost never see that.

I’m in Houston and I’ve grown 2 from seed. One is 2 years old and the other less than a year. The 2yr is about 6 feet tall - both are in pots. They don’t like cold weather or chlorine in the water.

Lady at the nursery grew one that is now 10. She says you can permanently plant them at about 7-10 years. They’ll start to fruit and won’t die off in a freeze (they will lose their leaves though).

If you're trying to grow from a pit you got from a commercially grown avocado, I have read that you won't get any fruit. I guess it's from the genetic modifications they perform on the commercial varieties. Everyone I spoke with said you have to graft off of a fruit bearing tree.

That's just what I've been told.
