Adding shelf to A/V armoire

I recently purchased an antique armoire to store and hide all of my a/v equipment. I would like to add a shelf in the piece and would prefer to use a solid shelf rather than plywood. The dimensions I need for this shelf are 54-1/2” x 23-1/4” x 1/2”. I am having trouble finding a sheet of solid wood, are there any places that can be recommended?

Have you looked at Lowes or Home Depot? they both have areas with unfinished furniture-grade planks for sale. That is pretty wide for a single board, but you might get lucky.

I did check both and they both had pieces close, but not quite big enough.

What kind of wood working skills do you have? A solid wood shelf will be much weaker than a plywood shelf.
With plywood you could glue an edge band on the plywood and you’d likely never know the difference
For a 54” shelf you would probably need a vertical edge board for added strength regardless.

I'd say just get in touch with a local cabinet shop and they can whip out pretty much anything you want. get it unsanded and unfinished to save yourself a few bucks.

How would it be supported? That is a long, wide shelf and quite thin. Plywood trimmed with solid wood is your best bet. Definitely ask a cabinet shop to make it if you don't have all the equipment - saws, planers, sanders, clamps, glue, etc.

Everyone above this post provides solid recommendations. However, if you are insistent on a solid hardwood board, you can call Service Lumber in Baton Rouge and inquire if they have something that can meet your requirements. It’s been a couple years since I’ve been there but they had large selection of large, wide boards of many types of woods, both domestic and exotic.

I would think finding a board that wide, only a 1/2 thick might be difficult, but a thicker board (4/4 or 5/4) could be cut with a bandsaw and then planed to 1/2 inch thick dimension by a wood worker or cabinet shop.
But as others have said, a board that thin would require that the exposed edge be banded (reinforced) with another solid piece of wood to prevent it from sagging and warping over time.

What this man said. Just use a piece of plywood and put a piece of solid wood stock across the front edge that is at least 1 1/2 inches wide to give the shelf more strength so it doesn't sag as easily.
