Just had service on a rental unit AC and $270 total. 75 for the service and 195 for the 40mfd capacitor. That seems a bit steep for a $6 part or ...is this normal and i should just pay it.

There was no advising of the charge prior to work like their site states.

I think I paid $80 last year for a capaciter and labor. He gave me the other capaciter in case I need it in the future. I was happy.

Was it River City 1 hour air in Baton Rouge? They are insane on prices, and that's about what I was quoted. Absolutely crazy!

We paid $175 ($100 labor/$75 part) for a capacitor replacement last Friday.

That is insane, call them out. You can easily get a capacitor for under $20.

If you do not have a spare capacitor, go look at your A/C unit and see what kind you have a go buy one. This is the problem most of the time. Be prepared to save yourself a bunch of money.

That seems steep to me. My guy usually charges about $75 for a call like that.

But, it's someone I've used for over 30 years.

Some good USA made HVAC capacitors I see recommended by HVAC techs can run in up to the $30 to 50 range (your retail cost if you ordered on Amazon or HVAC supply company) - cheaper Chinese capacitors - $10 to 20 - your retail cost. Whatever one they used they put a hell of markup on it, or they reversed the labor and part cost on your invoice. Either way, that total cost seems to be a $100 to $150 more than I would have expected to pay.

My wife paid over $200 for a Capacitor repair a couple years ago when I was out of town. I was furious, guy was there under 15 minutes.

But yes, that's normal unfortunately. The AC repair guys around me all charge $150-200 just to come out. Its usually something like $75 trip charge and $99 service charge, no matter what's done.

It is such an easy repair to do yourself if you have any know how.

But to answer, yes that is pretty normal. Also had the same issue when I was out of town and had an infant with my wife at home. $250-300 or so repair that I can do myself in 5 minutes for $20.

never use that company again, high markups are the norm, especially for rentals because they know you got money, but $195 is crazy insane price, did you hire a crack head service man? because thats what it sounds like

i would call then and ask why a $20-$25 part you can buy yourself cost $195 from them, if you dont like the answer tell them to take their part back and just pay the $75 service fee and you will go buy your own capacitor

FYI - just about any service company will mark up the prices on a capacitor to around $80-$100 so thats not unreasonable. whats unreasonable is they wanted double that

That's pretty much standard pricing right now....maybe not if you have a local in a small town, but any sort of reasonably large HVAC company in a reasonable size town doesn't do a service call for under $150 or so.

I paid Benjamin Franklin Plumbing $370 to re do the seal on a toilet that had broken. Absolute scam, but I was desperate and needed it done that same day and no one else was available.

Same day service is extremely expensive during the busy season.

not to hijack but what happens when your capacitor goes out?

i just noticed the outside fan not turning. there's still cool air blowing but it's definitely warmer in that section of the house. was about to call someone....

If you're having a tech do it then it's normal. Had $325 worth of service done Monday. $226 for the same part, $3 for a fuse and $100 for the service. Repair took under 15 minutes as I had already checked off the other potential causes before the tech arrived. Real world cost of parts is $18 total.

The part is incredibly easy to install if you have one laying around. Diagnosing the blown fuse in the inside unit would be tricky, otherwise it's a simply DIY.

Edit: My call was after 9PM, so there's that. Keep spares and save the coin.

If your outside fan is not running but the compressor is running turn the unit off - it could potentially damage the compressor. If the outside fan is not turning on or the compressor, good chance it’s a bad capacitor - at least you should hope it’s that as that’s about the cheapest and quickest repair a tech can do on a HVAC - even at $300.

The capacitor holds a charge (think of it as a battery) and gives a kick to get the condenser fan going. If its a dual capacitor your compressor can start and run but your fan could be out. To check and see if the issue is the capacitor take a stick and spin the condenser fan blade. if the fan takes off change the capacitor and you should be good.

All you guys bitching about the price after y’all find out what part needs to be changed but have no idea how to figure out how to get to that part. Your not not just paying for the part you are paying for his knowledge and paying for it to be done and done right.
