I get a call today from my wife complaining about the house being hot today and of course I think nothing of it because it’s pretty hot and I figure the unit is just trying to keep up. Set thermostat on 74 but it gets to 78 and doesn’t come down until after the sun is down. I know nothing about A/C units but I went in the attic to look around and there is some water in the drip pan. Nowhere near filling it up but there is some. The main thing that worries me is that the bottom 2x4 that the unit is propped up on looks like it’s definitely wet or has been wet recently. Much darker than the rest. There was some insulation in there too but I vacuumed it out. Thanks

Did you check the outside unit? Does the outside fan turn on? Was it still running when you checked it? Possibly froze up on you. Also possible the pan filled up and tripped the float switch. Do you have a secondary drain line that the pan drains to?

The pan normally has a float switch to cut off the unit when the water gets to a certain height. Check that float switch and see if it turned the unit off.

Also, do you know the age of the unit?

Unit is 9 years old. Fan running fine on compressor outside. I checked the outside where drip pipe runs and ground was bone dry. I’m trying to post picture now

Is that 2x4 in the drain pan?

That's pretty normal to get some water in the pan on occasion. I do not see a problem there.

I would suggest you have an AC tech come and check your freon levels and give the unit a service/going over.

Yea. That’s what concerned me really. It clearly soaked up some water

Do this.

Sounds like you have a working unit so best to have a tech check it out while you still have some cool air. Might be a little low on refrigerant and the evaporator coil maybe partially freezing over restricting air flow. And if you haven’t done so in a while, check your air filter to make sure it’s not clogged and restricting air flow.

capacitor
I don't actually know, but my A/C went out the other day and it was the capacitor.

That's the emergency pan. Check the drain from the pan where the coil is. It could drain to a different spot.

sounds like it froze up, if the filter wasnt clogged with dust then have the freon checked

in the mean time, if it is iced up, set the fan to run instead of auto so it "hopefully" melts the ice when the unit shuts off. or just turn the unit off for an hour and set the fan to run instead of auto so it melts the ice, then leave the fan on "on" and turn the a/c back on so it works overnight and get it checked tomorrow.

I had this issue last year. The unit was running, but not cooling the house. The outside fan would start, but the compressor wasn't turning on. Checked the compressor with a multi-meter and it was good. Changed the two capacitors and the compressor started when the unit started. Just have to troubleshoot.

sounds like it is low on refrigerant. Shouldn't be hard to get someone to fill it up and find the leak.

Had a guy look at it this morning. Says 2lb leak in the condenser. Says they can just keep checking it as needed but he will get me an estimate on replacing it from his boss. Not a huge fan of his first guess at an estimate.

That sucks to have a coil leak on an 9 year old unit. What brand A/C do you have?

Under warranty still? Not sure what warranty was back then, but mine is 10 years now.
