The unit was old when I bought the house 5 years ago but it may be close to dying now. 2000 sq ft house - what am I looking at for a new unit?

Depends on what horsepower you go with, probably $350 at least

I have a 14 seer 3 ton Rudd available. Only used for 15 months. I have in storage. 100% guaranteed no DOA. Make any offer as I just have it sitting in storage.

There was a thread a few weeks back you might search for and find good information. General conclusion was $5-10k. Get at least 3 quotes.

I'd go 4.5 ton.

I think you'll need a 4 ton.

I paid 5800 installed for a Rheem 3 ton in March.

So 7-9k sounds right.

What kind of heat ?

If gas, are you keeping the furnace ?

What is the tonnage in there now ?

There is no such thing as a 4.5 ton. Closest to that is a 5 ton, 2 stage.

Most accurate gauge is to get an honest answer from previous occupants. Ask,

On a hot July evening, at 2 pm, did you notice if the AC was able to overcome and shut off ?

Yes, Tigeraddict is correct, above.

Also the other guy above is in range - 7-9 k

I had a 3 ton installed 4 years ago. Kept the furnace. Just replaced the outside unit, ran new tubes, and new evaporator in the attic. Ran me $3.5k but I helped with installation.

My brother just replaced his complete HVAC with a Trane (I think he told me 3 1/2 ton) and it was $9k. His wasn’t the Cadillac of the Trane models either.

I had a new Rudd 5 ton installed in March of 2021. It a 17 Seer, 2 stage, complete replacement with a new return duct installed and some duct work repairs and it was $13k all in. Probably doesn’t mean much with all the recent price increases though.
