30 day update - Made a mistake - how poorly will slit seeding go?

I am scheduled to have my backyard slit seeded this coming Friday. I live near Dayton so it will be a tall fescue blend (with a small % of Kentucky bluegrass).

I wanted to kill some weeds and crabgrass beforehand so I sprayed Roundup. I figure it doesn’t stick around so it won’t impact seed germination.

I finished spraying and realized I used my Roundup for Lawns (selective herbicide that also kills crab grass and yellow nutsedge). shite. I know this lingers. I’ve read that you shouldn’t seed for 3 to 4 weeks after using this.

My question is, will the areas I sprayed not germinate at all, or just at a reduced rate. Luckily it was only in certain areas and not my entire backyard. Thanks in advance.

Isn't it too late for seed germination this growing season up there anyway?

eta: I just looked it up and it seems y'all do seed in September. Strange because its almost too late to seed in Dallas.

this is the perfect time for us. You want to seed no later than 45 days before the first frost.

After more reading, I think I know the answer for all the chemicals except for the 2 4-d. The other chemicals either won’t impact it or for the ones that will have degradation, they recommend slit seeding.

So, will slit seeding help minimize the impact of the 2 4-d?

I have put down seed the same day as using RoundUp. Can you link me to the product you used?

That is a weed killer not pre-emergent, right? You really only have to worry about pre-emergents.

Here’s the link to the product.

Roundup kills weeds not the lawn

I'm not going to say 100% you are fine but this product is not a pre-emergent. I think if you sprayed at seed down or before, you are probably OK. Do not spray after seed down until the new grass is well established.

The website only mentions not using the product on young grass but it doesn't ever say anything specifically about seeds so I think you are OK.

Good luck!

Thanks! The yard is being slit seeded today, and it's been a couple days since the product was spot sprayed. I think it will be fine also.

Update - I spoke to my lawn care folks and they said not to worry. They said there may be some degradation to germination, but not much to worry about.

They also said that if in 2 weeks I have bare spots or spots that look thinner than others, they will come and re-seed for me at no charge. The best part is they said if it’s too late in the season (depends on first frost), they will take note and reseed in the spring at no charge. That made me feel much better.

12-day update (when pics were taken):
The seedlings are coming in nicely and are between 1.5-2" tall. It looks like the grass seed took in almost every area. There are a couple small areas that the grass came in thin, so I'll have the company come back in the Spring to take care of that for me.

It looks as though the roundup "weed killer for lawns" did not negatively impact germination whatsoever.

Here are the before and after pictures:

30 day update (and final update). I’m extremely happy with how the yard turned out. It will thicken up nicely next spring, and my yard company will still hit any thin areas for no charge.

5 hrs south if you slit seeded 2 weeks ago 80% sporadic frost close but we didn’t get frost yet

I should have clarified. They’re coming next Spring to redo any thin areas. Just too late in the season right now.

I get uncooked ones overnighted to me. Sausage and pepperoni. Delicious. My dad went to school with roger glass. I’ll be getting some squares in a few weeks can’t wait.
