11 years after build mold/mildew is discovered under vanity next to shower
Posted by Old Sarge on 11/22/19 at 10:02 am07
All tile torn off and builder didn’t install liner correctly at all (cut all the way to floor on both sides of curb) 100% directly the cause of damage and master shower including concrete pan having to be complete ripped out and rebuilt
Called builder and got the “well technically it was a contractor of ours that is responsible “. “But the house warranty for workmanship has long expired “
Gonna cost me about 4,000.00 in total doing some work myself. Is there any chance a lawyer could get me any resolution?

Quick answer, IMO, is no.
Or, at least it won't be worth it in the long run.
But, if this contractor has a history of issues, perhaps you can get something

I imagine it could be a lot worse if I wasn’t doing a lot of demo and mold cleaning myself. Cut the bottom out of the vanities and have been bleaching the crap out of them while drying the wood out.

There is your answer. Welcome to home ownership.
I always remind people of things like this whenever they are comparing renting to owning. Owning a home is very expensive and you have to account for much more than the mortgage loan payment.

What sucks is that this is completely preventable and I can’t fathom why the plumber fricked it up and how the builders rep missed or just didn’t care
in my case i had a perfectly good bathroom (albeit dated) and had zero intention of tearing it down but given the location and amount of damage (had to replace 3 joists and 3 or 4 studs) there was zero change for a patch-work fix with 30 year old tile. had to rip up tile and remove the shower wall to get to one of the rotten joists so just burned the whole room down to the crawl space and started over.
ZERO evidence of damage from the bathroom side itself; we only caught when running a gas line under the house & the guy noticed the sub-flooring had collapsed under the shower. basically the tile backerboard was the only thing preventing us from falling into the crawlspace when taking a shower.

When my mom sold her house they found after the fact that water had been leaking from the roof to the kitchen and the floor was starting to go.
Thank goodness the buyers had an inspector but he completely missed it during the inspection so it was on him.
This was about 2 years after my dad had passed away. She was completely freaked out when the agent called her. All I told her is that it was 100% on the inspector and not her.
