As a distance runner, is it bad to be a heel striker? Is it something you can train out or are you a heel striker primarily due to one’s build/hip tightness?

I started as a heel striker. I’m now a forefoot striker as nature intended. Contrary to what others have said, I didn’t find the transition too bad. It did take time. Heel striking is a product of modern footwear. You can’t heel strike running barefoot. Can’t do it. And yes, this opinion is unpopular and in the minority.

Yeah, Cajun Cup humidity was not expected. I ran a 48:17 but I feel like I left something on the table in this run. Still, very happy.

My friend that just ran a 2:45 marathon in NYC is a heel striker. "Born to Run" is a great book, but it's not the end all be all, yes modern shoes have made us more of heel strikers, but modern shoes are also the reason we will one day break the 2 hour marathon...

+1

Same as anything with running: if it works for you and doesn't get you injured, great. I've seen so many things come and go throughout the years that I'm convinced you can do whatever you want in this sport. Barefoot shoes, max cushion with a carbon plate, heel strike, forefoot strike, double threshold, Maffetone, the list goes on. Do whatever you want if it works. Tons of pros heel strike and they've got orders of magnitude more resources and talent than us. By the same token, some of them prance so much that their heel never touches the ground for the whole marathon.

Several women in the Sat AM group that do this. Basically, land on their toes and their heels never hit the ground. I have strong feet and ankles, but there’s no way I could do that.
