How did it go?
Posted on 1/28/24 at 7:26 pm to BaddestAndvari
Crushed it. 1:38:04, 37th overall, 2nd in my age group. Plan was 1st two miles at 8/mile, next 3 at 7:45, next 5 at 7:30, final 5k as fast as I could hold.
My foot went numb as usual around mile 4 and came back at mile 8. Felt like a new man after it came back and brought it home comfortably uncomfortable
My A goal was 1:44:00, B goal was break 1:40:00. I knew I had the fitness to break 1:40, just wasn’t sure with coming off of being sick.
Was a much better run this year after capitulating last year with the same goals. Decent course and support as expected. It’s a well produced race, I’d suggest to anyone.

Nice, I wish my feet would go numb when I'm running endurance races, would help keep the pain down

Always great when you meet your stretch goal! If you are anything like me you basically have your "goal" that will make you happy, but the "real" goal is the stretch goal, so that's exciting!
Grats man, do you plan to do any Fulls anytime soon?!
P.S: Turns out another friend of mine was also doing the Full at the Big Beach, she finished in a blistering 6:14 - I told her "you went out and did something that 99% of the population couldn't, you should be proud you actually went out and ran / walked 26.2 miles in one sitting, that's pretty stinkin' impressive, meanwhile most of America were sitting in front of their TVs eating Oreos" - I did tell her I felt the Half was the perfect distance... as I train for my 3rd Full

Still doing the zone 2 stuff. Incorporating hill repeats and a threshold run during the week. 13 miles Saturday and cross training zone 2 on Sunday. Target race is the half at Bridge St in Huntsville at first of April. Love to break 1:30.

Are you running in the Railway half for fun or anything? I'll be doing the half for fun on Saturday.
Did 800m repeats on Tuesday all my thigh muscles and ankles and, well, just about everything was hurting today on my 8 mile recovery run. Tomorrow's Tempo run might end up just being another recovery run... with slightly faster shoes and way less hilly route

So I'm guessing zone 2 stuff has been going good for you? Seems that way

It’s been much easier to get my mileage in. It’s way less stressful and my nagging injuries have mostly gone away.
My zone 2 mile has sped up enough to where I don’t have to walk much anymore. Did 7 tonight with the dog. Hill repeats again tomorrow.
I doubt I’ll do the Black Creek deal. Think I’ll do the Village to Village 10K. Didn’t realize that the Bridge St Half was same weekend as Statue to Statue.

Solid workout today.
3 x 2 mile
11:59
11:47
11:31
Took out the first reps a bit faster than I was targeting but felt good all the way through. Was trying to target 12:20,12:00, then all out on the last rep.

Baddest
what about this statement you quoted from Aubie leads you t believe zone2 is working for him?

Aubie - never feel inadequate b/c someone else post a strong workout. way to many variables to have any meaningful comparison beyond "feelings".

the second post i think would verify that sentiment. He talks about how he's getting stronger and able to do things he wasnt able to.

I wouldn't say it's just the statement as much as all of his statements over the last few months. He seems to keep getting stronger and stronger with statements like this:
quote:
Love to break 1:30.
while continuing his zone 2 training.
I remember when he first started it he wasn't sure about it, I feel like he's seeing benefits, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't reading between lines that weren't actually there.

This, 1000 times this, everyone has someone else that if they tried to compare themselves to would feel "inadequate" if they let it

I figured this statement was what led to your response
"Love to break 1:30"
I could be way off but i don't recall Aubie posting any numbers that would actually generate this result. 1:30 half is 6:52 pace and i think he's still trying to hit a sub 7:00 pace 10k. This all goes back to my question about how to gauge Zone2 training is working and or what goals can be achieved by sticking with it.
Hopefully nobody takes my questioning personal, my goal is hopefully generate thought provoking conversation on here and not just posting of what someone ran today. I'm also just bitter b/c I can't run, nerve issue. I finally got into Western States 100 and right now I'd say i'll have to withdraw.

a PT I was talking to a few months ago basically put it as, "You just have to trust the science, and the science has proven time and time again that zone 2 works really well for endurance athletes" - does it feel natural or even right? No, but there are so many studies these days that show - it works.
Also, zone 2 might be different depending on who you are - if you were to look at my Garmin data you would see I go into zone 3 and sometimes even "touch" zone 4 during my zone 2 runs. Generally speaking though, I know what speeds I can go and at what effort to get to that 40 miles a week mark without being injured.
At the end of the day "zone 2 training" is really just listening to your body and doing light enough workouts that train your aerobic base and keep you from getting injured regularly.

Trail Running is a whole 'nother thing
I've had a few of my trail brethren' tell me about this website
Supposedly some of the highest succeeding trail runners use this calculation for their zone 2 - on The Adventure Jogger (trail running podcast) there was a Lady talking about how she only runs up hills during races and stuff like that. I've kinda gotten away from trails so I can't confirm or deny that stuff, but I do also feel like it was always a little easier to get nagging injuries or small issues on trails than it is on the Road, so I would think there is some truth to that?

My zone 2 pace has come down almost 2 mins since I started. It was 13mins plus. Weds night my first two miles were 11:30. I doubt I'll ever get to Kenyan level zone 2 pacing, but I'm curious to see how low I can get that number.
Zone 2 for me is really about my VO2 Max score. I want it to go up. I spent the last couple of years running at faster paces. Injuries seemed to nag me more and my VO2 (while high) never really improved. I will have the Vo2 test done again after my race an April and see if the needle was moved.

Good to see this thread is still going. I am trying to get back int running after a couple of years. I injured my hip doing heavy squats a couple of years and then went through a divorce. If the hip holds up, I hope to be race ready in the Spring.

quote:I cant remember if it was this thread or another thread but the idea is hopefully getting to where youre adding miles while staying at zone 2. so to start if you can only run say 4 miles at zone 2 youd sit there until you felt comfortable to bump it to 5 miles and so on. Indicator of that being your average hear rate going down for the run without a change in pace or inversely your pace dropping without a dip in heart rate. end goal being it's easier to run longer without a dip in aerobic performance.
This all goes back to my question about how to gauge Zone2 training is working and or what goals can be achieved by sticking with it.
While his post didnt really indicate that the tone is a pretty good indicator the zone 2 is working.
you may be on to something in the 1:30 goal for right now but if he keeps eating away at his training he'll get there.
Sorry about the injury dude. That sucks. Do you have a window to possibly still have it healed in time to give it a go? I have no idea when western states is.

15 easy miles today at 140HR. Tried taking the dog, but she didn’t want to run today. Only made it 4 miles. Took her home and came back for another 11. Currently sitting at the pizza place drinking beers like it’s my job.
Posted on 2/3/24 at 6:20 pm to Aubie Spr96
I feel you. I’ve been eating like a mad man today. Got really tempted with a 6 pack at the store earlier but think im gonna take a month or so break from beer to try and get the rest of my body to match what my legs are doing. Got 18 at 6:51 avg. first two were 7:15 so if you through those out I think I’m somewhere around 6:45 or so for 16 on the back end.
Posted on 2/4/24 at 9:14 am to Pedro
Maybe I’ll get there one day…..
