re: Yall putting with the pin in the cup in 2019?
In 1990 Pelz did a study. A human and a machine hit over 10,000 putts. Now these were off the green but he says it still hold true on green. The machine made 33% more. Human made 18% more. Pelz quote after the research. “When the rules permit, always leave the pin in unless it leans towards you.”

Did it today and didn’t see a huge difference, maybe on a super quick downhill putt I’ll leave it in.

I've been leaving it in for the longer putts. I don't have a good reason why. Just trying to feel it out. Maybe I'll start leaving it in on closer ones, too. 7-15 ft. I don't think I could do it inside that, especially if it's sunny and there's a flag shadow.

That’s the key, otherwise I could leave it in at all times and have no issues, I rammed a few against it today from 5-8 foot just to see what happened

I can confirm it doesn't matter if the flag is in or out if you can't scare the hole

re: Yall putting with the pin in the cup in 2019?
I played again yesterday and no one wanted to leave it in. I did notice that I putted what felt like better with it out. Leaving the pin in makes you want to take a straighter/faster line. I did have a much better ball striking day, so that could’ve been the difference I felt.

I have no real evidence, but I still like it out. However, with enough practice I could get used to it being in.

I played yesterday and only took the flag out for putts inside 6’ or so. I think leaving it in definitely helps with distance control on longer putts. It’ll be interesting to see how the pros handle it. If one guy in a final pairing wants it in all the time while the other wants it out that could slow play down a little bit going back and forth every hole.

Is this going to slow golf down even more? There was a group of 5 in front of me yesterday and it seemed like everyone in their group wanted something different. One guy would take it out, next guy would put it back in and then go through his pre-putt, next guy wanted it out...it went like this for most of the day.

That group probably would play slow no matter the rules.

Nah, should only speed things up. People will eventually realize there is an advantage to leaving it in if it's fiberglass and not leaning toward you.

I made 2 in from off the green yesterday, which I would have left the pin in anyway, but I found a lot of occasions where our group putted from long distance, not having to wait on the closest to the pin to tend.

That's just fricking silly. The guys that want it in should putt out then take it out for the rest of the group. This is the problem when new rule changes come in. It takes time for people to learn to apply them correctly with pace of play in mind.

I canned a 60 yard pitch on 18 that didn’t touch the stick

Left it in on 12 when I was in my pocket and it didn’t make any difference

Nope. It freaks me out to putt with it in and I can't make anything

re: Yall putting with the pin in the cup in 2019?
Sad thing is it was prob made to speed up pace of play, but now everyone is dissecting whether it will help or hurt on every putt. Watched a guy three putt yesterday and he kept analyzing whether the flag should be in or out on every putt. Finally my partner yelled some choice words to him.
