What was your “ah-ha” moment in golf?

Mine had to be centered pivot.. took me from 80s to 70s once I finally figured it out.

When I figured out how to use the bounce on wedges when chipping. Good chipping can save rounds and hide when you’re bad off the tee or with irons on a given day. Had one of those days today. 7 GIRs. Shot 75. Only birdie was a chip in.

I think I know what you mean, but tell me anyway

I took lessons from a pro in Dallas. He kept telling me “to stay connected”. I didn’t know what he meant and I went a while not asking him. Finally I said “Chris, I don’t know what you mean... can you explain this to me”. He talked me through how the right elbow is supposed to rotate externally instead of chicken winging going back. Went from an 18 to a 10 and broke 80 for the first time not long after that.

I fight this hard. I need to find some drills to help me. I’m not sure if it would be an ah - ha moment but it would at least make me feel better

When I figured out that most handicap matches are won before a shot is hit.

Being able to finish a 12 pack instead of a 6 pack of beer.

When I stopped looking at holes I had to survive to keep a good round going and started looking at holes as opportunities to shoot lower scores.
I.e. Not thinking if I par out I shoot 76, and instead thinking I'm 4 over on 14, I have 4 more chances to make birdie and get back to even.

On my drive it was the rotation mechanics. I used to start my lower body on my downswing way earlier than upper body which left the club face open.
Irons was to keep my head as still as possible. Used to have a lot of up and down movement which created inconsistent topping and duffing. Also focused on hitting down on the ball instead of picking it clean. Who gaf about the ground. Hit the ball and take a divot.
Wedges around the green: learned the bump and run with a pw or 9i instead of trying to flop a 58 up and down 20’.
Lastly, putting, I used to focus on my backswing and less on my forwardswing. Anymore I focus on keeping the putter face in a line towards my target after alignment is set.

I don’t know if this is an ah ha moment but the game really changed for me when I finally learned to 100% commit to the shot even if I’m not confident. Trusting that I can hit the picture I painted in my mind. Even if it doesn’t work out my miss is normally better off than when I made a non committed swing
Every now and then I let it slip and just hit an awful shot. Not reminder stay with it.

That was a big deal for me too. Every bogie, let’s go get that back. What do I need to do to birdie?

I’ve been having some really good “ah-ha” moments for the last 3 months. Been taking lessons and trying to get rid of my old swing. This weeks ah-ha was to stop choking the hell out of the grip and let the weight of the head perform like it should. Amazing how far the ball goes with much less effort when I’m loose gripped and sling shotting the club head from a wrist hinge.

I was playing my best golf ever and then entered a tournament and got beat like a drum by an ex D1 golfer who was out of shape and 30lbs over weight. That’s when I realized that “aha I actually suck”

When I figured out the only way to get those super low scores in a charity scramble was to cheat like everyone else was doing.

They use a “mulligan”, however, if the miss it, it does not count as their mulligan.
Basically, putt until you make it is what they do.
I played with a college player and I was the worst player as a single digit. We shot 53 and did not even place.

I always feel bad or sorry for individuals that have to cheat at a damn scramble- I always look at as a fun day to drink beer.

Ah-Ha moment was playing faster with less practice swings meant that I thought less about the shot I just hit and more about the shot in front of me.
2nd Ah-Ha moment, was thinking more about the actual swing and less about the outcome, I can't control what happens once the ball leaves my club. All I can control is the swing to put the ball in motion.

Can you elaborate on this one?

When I figured out that the arms mostly just work up and down in front of your torso.
