What tees do you play from?

I typically play from the one ups because that's typically the ones my partners or whoever I get paired up with plays from. It seems like playing the tips is a lost mystery.

I'd like to play the tips occasionally. I feel I'm long enough off the tee and enjoy the challenge but never do mostly because I don't want to be 'that guy' in the group.

Do you feel like having a wedge out on your approach on most holes is fair? At one point do you move back?

Maybe you should find a group of a skill level equal to yours?

I play the closest tee to 6500 yards, because I'm 42 and my swing speed is less than 100 mph and because I play the game for the challenge and enjoyment. Not to torture myself.

PS-if you don't break 80 from the tips everytime you play, you have no business playing from the tips.

It was just a question. It's not as much about skill level to me as it is about just getting out and having fun.

Just NEVER see people playing from the tips and think it'd be fun on occasion. My playmates are the same skill level. Typically shoot low 80s, will break into the high 70s on occasion.

Most of the strokes come around the green tho, and 42 ain't old baw! I hope it's not.

I usually play one up from the tips depending on the course. I try to play from a yardage that gives me the most natural approach shots.

For example when I play Carter Plantation I play yellow one up tees. On the front par 5s I've usually got a legitimate shot to hit a 3w or sometimes 3h to reach the green in 2, looking at a 9i-SW on most par 4 approach shots. Hit a mid iron on two of the par threes.

I've played out there from the two ups and it's just not natural. I've got the blue tees are really up, ive driven the green on 1 before, only plays about 260 when the tees are forward.

I've played Oak Harbor from the tips a few times, and it's just not fun.

Didn't mean to come across as curt. Apologies.

If that group played from the tips, you'd all be shooting in the upper 80's on a good day and most likely in the 90's regularly.

If I were a course operator, the grass on the "tips" tee box would be about 2 ft high unless I was hosting a scratch tourney. Guys shooting 100 from the tips is part of the reason pace of play is so shitty most places.

Like I said, if you're not a low single digit, you don't have any business back there.

One ups with a group typically. When I'm alone and practicing, I've started playing the tips.

Ill mix it up... some times tips and then others from the amateur box. Keeps things interesting. I am a low 80s golfer.

I play the whites for the most part.

I read you should multiply your true 5 iron distance by 36 and see what tee fits.

5 iron/hybrid for me is about 175 so me playing a 7200 yard course is silly. 6300 is enough to test my skills.
It lets me hit 8iron on some par 4s and 5 wood on others after a good drive. We have great variety in our par 4s from my tee. 354 to 440.

If you are truly driver + wedge to every par 4, you probably need to play back a tee.

*this assumes that those wedges are coming from the short grass 60%+ of the time. Lots of young bucks drives in my league fly over mine on their way to the shite.

Depends on the course and playing partner(s).

Lot of courses in Chicagoland are only about 6300 - 6500 from all the way back. I don't like to be hitting hybrid/wedge every other hole.

If the wind kicks up around here, though, watch out. Courses can play 500+ yards longer.

Typically try to play something between 6500 to 6800.

I played with 3 young guys one day. Almost every par 4, they said, "go ahead and hit sir. We are going for the green."

That actually hit past a few of the greens and on 2 or 3 of them.

I was never able to hit a ball like those guys. Crazy distance. All college golfers.

One ups unless I am the only one playing that tee, then I move up or back depending on what those guys do. I hate being the only one using a tee box.

Whichever are closest to around 6400-6600ish yards.

11 handicap.

Funny story.. A few years ago, a buddy and I played Pinehurst #2 a few years ago. Got paired with 2 singles. One dude drove down from Canada for just the round and was cool. The other guy was all decked out in his golf gear, talking about his game, and even got himself a caddy. We'll call him the Douche. All of us but the douche played up1 boxes. The douche started out playing the tips. After about 3 holes and seeing how that he was the worst golfer out of all of us, the caddy made his arse start teeing off with us. Dude was walking to the back tees, and the caddy just started going, naw naw naw naw and carried his bag to our box. The three of us chuckled at each other.

I shot a 96 and was happy. Buddy shot a 112. He had some rough holes. We usually shoot right around the same. I've improved my game by about 8-10 strokes, so I'd like to try that course again.

That's a bad feeling. I play as a single a bit and usually just play from wherever everyone else plays when paired up and blend in without causing problems.

If they're playing the two ups tho, it's just too close and I'll ask if they mind if I play one tee back (one up from tips). Hate it on days I start shanking it off the tee and feel pretty douchey so if it goes on like that for 3 holes, I'll just move up.
