What kind of problems occur with an inside takeaway?

I just videoed my swing and I’m way inside, crazy how far in it is considering I felt like I was on plane.

Takeaway should be straight back and up right?

Almost no tour pros are inside on the takeaway.

Depends. Are you getting inside because you’re rolling your hands or are you getting inside via massive body turn?

Most of the time, whatever happens in the backswing causes the opposite to happen in the downswing.

What’s your ball flight typically like? What’s your usual miss?

miss is a massive hook, an OB hook

Feel like your hands don’t get deeper than your heels at the top of the backswing, and really push those hands away from your torso at the top.

Feel like you’re swinging to the left in the downswing...I know it sounds counterintuitive.

If you’re still hooking after these changes, your clubface is probably closed to the path. Weaken your grip just a little and see what happens.

Do you feel like you get a good weight transfer and turn through the shot?

You should feel as though you are taking the club back low and slow. But, there are several other parts to the swing that can get out of sync, and cause a bad shot...

There’s your answer with regards to the problem with taking it back too far to the inside... it typically puts you in a position at the top called “across the line” which means your club is pointing to the right of the target line instead of parallel to it. From there, 3 things typically happen:

1) you reroute the club in the downswing by casting it from the top. This would result in a dead pull or a weak slice

2) you get into what Tiger called being “stuck”... meaning you can’t get your arms back in front of the body in the downswing. This usually results in a block right.

3) or, your issue... the huge hook. This means you aren’t rerouting, but attacking the ball from too far inside.

So, work on reversing your loop... take it back down the line, which will feel cartoonishly like you’re taking it back way to the outside to start. Then, as you start your transition, you should feel like the club is dropping down slightly as your lower body starts the transition. Watch Sergio’s swing for reference.

Agree with the above...

I have the same issue as the OP that I struggle with at times. Here are a couple vids to check out for drills.

I struggle with the same thing. my hands get too far inside the toe line. If I close my stance and align a little to the right of the target it seems to help. you will naturally swing toward the target which keeps your hands a little less inside. for me, anyway. everything works the first few times...

Check out Clay Ballard, Top Speed Golf, on You tube. He has some good stuff on takeaway. He preaches long slow takeawy and shows you top pros who do same.

Way back in the 70s having read Hogans Five Fundamentals I became overenamored of the inside takeaway in an effort to eliminate a slice

As is frequently the case, especially before video was available, too much of a good thing caused me to be handsy and too far inside too early causing me to be crossed over at the top big time resulting in very inconsistent ball flight.

With the easy availability of video feedback one should be able to avoid a similar misunderstanding of ones position relative to the correct plane and the resulting inconsistency in ball striking

Good luck!

I like Clays videos as well.

However it is so hard for me to take the club away slow.

I had the same problem.

When I went to the range I’d put down a club directly behind the ball and try to take it back along that line until my body turn took over.

Had me hitting a fade again in no time.

I'm just kind of quick with everything I do. Slow and deliberate is tough for me. But I'm a massive slicer with a driver so my problem is different.

I’m kind of the same way.

With a regular swing off the tee, I’m always fading the ball hard. So I play a draw off the tee with a hard inside takeaway. It works for me off the tee but that’s it.

Strangely when I get into my mid irons, it straightens itself out. Weird to say but it’s true.
